Gigantism

Gigantism is a biological phenomenon in which the size of an animal species is greatly increased while its anatomical characteristics remain largely unchanged in comparison to their mundane relatives. The phenomenon can be seen in species throughout Holos and appears to be more common in Holos than in other parallel universes. The phenomenon is poorly understood and thought to be the result of continued interaction between evolutionary and supernatural forces. Some gigantistic species have been believed to be the result of magical experimentation by mortals but these examples rarely result in a self-sustaining population of animals.   Compared to their mundane counterparts, gigantistic populations are far smaller, owing to increased competition for food and territory. However, true gigantistic populations are largely self-sustaining and play an important role in their native ecosystems. Some gigantic species, such as the megalodon , or giant shark, are in fact more primitive forms of mundane species that have survived to the present day, while others seem to have appeared convergent with their smaller relatives.   Gigantic species are often considered sacred or semi-divine to mortal cultures across Holos. While they are most notable when compared to mundane wildlife in Holos, many gigantic species can be found thriving in both the Elemental and Mirrored Realms of Holos, where their large size is mitigated by the unique physics of those planes.
