Deverin

"Your gifts are well suited for a king, for an emperor, or indeed for a God of the Council. But are they suitable for me, Most Cunning Hunger Himself?" — The Devourer's Ledgers

The Hungering Secret

Deverin is one of the deities typically associated with the Unspoken Six. He is considered the god of greed, lust, avarice, envy, jealousy, and gossip. He rules from a realm set adrift in the Astral Plane called the Voracious Palace and is believed to be the creator of all aberrations including oozes, beholders, and mind flayers.

Divine Domains

Deverin is the god of greed, lust, avarice, hunger, gluttony, envy, jealousy, secrets and the Voracious Palace. His domains are Knowledge and Death.

Holy Books & Codes

Followers of Deverin read from a text called the Devourer's Ledgers, which promises a fraction of the riches and mortal pleasures that Deverin receives to be passed on to them if they serve him faithfully and fully.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Deverin's divine symbol is that of a crowned circlet of thorns or a bloodstained gold coin. His sacred colors are gold and green.

Tenets of Faith

Unlike other followers of the Unspoken Six, followers of Deverin are fiercely loyal to him and his court, and those with the slightest suspicion of disloyalty or even dual loyalty to another God of the Six are tortured and executed in the most frightening of ways.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Deverin is depicted in a number of ways, usually as a sickly, almost gaunt old man. This is likely because of the belief that Deverin is eternally cursed to want more—more food, more carnality, more wealth, and more praise. He often also carries scepters or writs proclaiming his power while also whispering into the skulls of those he's executed on suspicions of disloyalty.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

It is said that Deverin was once the court banker of the Heavenly Council. He became enamored with the gold of his masters and developed a taste for mortal consorts. He managed to steal the entire Grand Vaults of the Celestial Mountains and used the magic stored within the god's gold to build his own realm called the Voracious Palace. For this treachery, the god Qingu cursed Deverin to never be content with that which he earned, whether they be riches, affections, or accolades.   Some claim that it was Rheseldar that helped Deverin steal the contents of the Grand Vaults. She also created the yugoloths and gave them to Deverin, with the ultimate hope that they would eventually betray the Hungering Secret. Yet they remain fiercely loyal only to him, for he pays them in magical wealth beyond mortal comprehension.
