Ókan

"Are you ready to see true Darkness?" — the Echoes of the Beast

The Beast In Darkness

Ókan is perhaps the oldest deity in the cosmos and some form of him can be found in every culture in the Material Plane. He is the god of darkness, fallen mortals, monstrosities, stasis, the lost, loneliness, lies, and the Unknown. He is said to be the most powerful of all gods, if not for the mere presence of his divine foil, Uriah, the Sun Radiant. He was the first of the Unspoken Six, though it seems as though he rarely feels the need to collaborate with them. Many fear him, yet his motivations are unknown. He appears to be content with the temptation of mortals and the slow, but inevitable death of light within the cosmos. He is patient, hungry, and at times almost fatherly. Yet there is always a malicious, selfish, and irredeemable evil within the Beast In Darkness.

Divine Domains

Ókan is the god of darkness, fallen mortals, monstrosities, stasis, the lost, loneliness, lies, and the Unknown. His domains are Death and Nature.

Holy Books & Codes

Little is written about Ókan beyond his appearance and his unending presence. In fact, perhaps the most comprehensive description of Ókan comes from the "Tale of the Spindrelthing," a children's folktale about two Kerkish children that get lost in the woods and are adopted by something called the Spindrelthing.   Those who claim to follow Ókan have a holy text called the Tome of the Unknown. However, it is unclear if this text does truly reflect Ókan's desires, as copies of the text vary wildly in their content.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Ókan’s symbol appears to be the same as his actual appearance: a pair of glowing white eyes set amid a tangle of black, twisting antlers or branches.

Holidays

It is said that once a year, on the night of the brightest Blood Moon, Ókan mounts a great shadow beast and leads the Darkhunt. Those that a slain in this hunt are brought to live in the Haunted Wood for eternity. Children are especially sought by Ókan who makes them his Shadow Rangers that watch over the Wood’s creatures.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Despite his repudiated evil nature, Ókan rarely interacts with mortals for their detriment. He is seen as a dark nature god, horribly cruel but also very interested in the balance of the universe. He seeks only to maintain the status quo in many cases because he knows that the collapse of all material things is inevitable and that he will eventually triumph.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Óan is frequently depicted as a cloaked figure with glowing, haunting white eyes and a shadowy headdress of branches or antlers. Sometimes he is but the two glowing white eyes. Some claim the true form of Ókan is that of a great, unending conjuring of lost souls, eyes vacant and mouths agape in the horror of seeing the Unknown. Those that see Ókan's true form go mad instantly, for it is as though they have seen the End of the Cosmos itself.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Ókan is said to be oldest god. He appeared the moment Uriah was birthed from the flesh of the fallen Old One Gura and ever stands just out of sight of the God of Light. He has survived this long largely because of this as he can only be seen by those whom he choses.

Social

Hobbies & Pets

It is said that Ókan keeps a number of spectral or shadow creatures in his realm of the Haunted Wood, including dark shadow mastiffs—the true foes of deathdogs, hell hounds, and all of mortalkind's canine companions.

Speech

His speech is said to be deep and sonorous. It echoes in one's ears but rarely is raised above a soft chiding.
