People expect great things from April Winters, being the culmination of a long lineage of Superheroes who made history, a bloodline almost as revered as that of royalty. April’s mother, Raven Nightingale, was the leader of the world’s greatest team of superheroes. Raven’s father, Grant Nightingale, was the world’s greatest superhero. Grant’s father, Victor Nightingale, was the world’s very first superhero. With such a bloodline with such a powerful history, April often feels overwhelmed, like she can’t possibly live up to the expectations placed on her shoulders.
Her self-doubt about being a successful superhero, let alone one to follow in the footsteps of the family legacy, is compounded by her first ever attempt at crime-fighting, when her ex-boyfriend Jason Dimond turned on her. He tried to push her off the roof of a skyscraper, but she was able to use her powers to phase through the building and back onto the roof behind him, accidentally pushing him off the ledge and to his death instead. As her brother Baxter put it, “It was the only thing that could leave a scar on the girl who can’t be touched.”
