Tanirath Settlement in Hislariya | World Anvil

Tanirath

This article is a WIP. It will continue to be edited during July and likely after the SC prizes adjudication.
Tanirath is the name the Zemesh's Clan gave to the settlement they built 100 years ago in the Samuaxi Islands as the base of the fast expanding and reconnecting Clan.

A new home, an old family

No, we stop here.
— Davke
When Davke Arhuna started to seek the aid of other makarid's researchers to interpret the fragment of Zemesh's family tree that she discovered, she found herself suddenly surrounded by potential long lost familyin what rapidly expanded to a sizeable nucleus of a Clan.   Soon it became clear that their ranks were far too numerous to be fit in a house or even a restored castle, so the group, by then counting about 200 people, set sail off the coasts of the mainland hoping to find refuge in the raft village, but before they could reach it, they found a better solution in a deserted island in the midst of the Samuaxi Archipelago.   Between the protection of the many sandbanks and gorges that make the navigation around the island difficult, and the presence of a large community of pirates and outlaws in the nearby islands, the settlement, named Tanirath by the name inscribed in the Zemesh fresco, provided some natural defences to the often persecuted members of the growing community.

A safe space for everyone

If your cousins keep breeding at this rate we'll need to double up the community rooms by the end of the year
— a Zemian joke
The settlement grew from a group of mismatched driftwood huts to include a hundreds year later a busy port that can harbour more than 50 vessels at a time, a city square surrounded by the small government power seats and one of the biggest Sea Dragon's temple, a naval arsenal, schools ranging from nurseries to Academia level education, and a Community centre that is able to host the entirety of the city-state population during their traditional celebrations.   The settlement is currently ruled by Nergal Zikir, the current High Izar of the whole clan, who rules over the city and is, at least nominally, the person of reference of all Zemesh descendant alive in Hislariya.   They are aided in the government task by a council of miyiks, elected by the population among their most esteemed members with veto power by the High Izar. These hold the legislative and justice power and can count on the military power of the wepon academy masters to maintain the order inside the community and protect it from outside dangers.   Thanks to them and a general population well trained in the martial arts and the use of magic, the clan has maintained the control of the island, its busy port and a band of waters estimated as about 2km off its coast.   The city's  naval power const of 13 fully crewed and armed clippers and another dozen of mixed heavy and light cargo ships. The biggest asset of the settlement, however, is preserved in the vaults of its Academy: the knowledge of the draconic magic that their researchers patched up, from the different families of origin. To these days the knowledge of the dragons chants that Tanirath's Academy holds is twice that of any single other known clan.   The Clan of Zemesh, at the moment, counts about 35000 makarids living in the island. Though mainly formed by makarids, a small number of humans (about 150 individuals) got adopted into the clan, either because of their romantic involvement with one of its members or because they were abandoned at a young age by their family of origin because affected by makaridism and subsequently adopted by a makarid family. For the same reasons, a small percentage of the community is also formed by makarids of non-Zemesh descendance and there are rumours of one or two dragons hiding among them too.

Merchants and pirates

Fill up that hold fast! I want to be in Bada by the end of the week!
— an impatient ship captain
The economy of the city is based largely on commerce (and piracy) but it also holds the control over some unique natural resources, thanks to the unique climate of the Samuaxi islands,  like the plantations of golden flower, a flower whose pollen is a potent aphrodisiac and commands high prices from the rich people in the continent.   In commercing the precious ingredient, they have the advantage of being protected from pirate attacks and of transporting a lightweight and non voluminous product that can be transported rapidly and inexpensively to the continent.   Both the golden flower commerce and the link with the pirates, also meant that the ships flying the Tanirath's flag, are renowned as reliable and fast vehicle and several merchant ships command high prices for discrete and reliable transport of goods and people to and from the continent.

Zemesh's Clan

The Clan of the descendant of Zemesh, the makarid clan that can boast the oldest documented genealogy and that has the most solid knowledge of the dragon's magic.

I love it. I wonder tho, as they live in islands, do they have enough land to make farms to support such a big city or they depend on trade for the food?

It's not that big of a city, and they are mostly merchants. But I will have a second look at real life stats and see if it could work.

Golden floooower.   I love the image of when the settlement was first founded it was a bunch of mismatched driftwood huts. I'm proud of them for creating such a place to live. :D
