Crimson squid

WIP - Summer Camp quality. This will continue to be edited during July and likely after the prizes adjudication.
In the depths of the Svajan Sea lives a creature that is highly sought after by the makarids that inhabit the Samuaxi islands.   The squid belongs actually to a family of octopusses that have 6 short tentacles and two long ones, making it look more like a squid or a cuttlefish when it's swimming.   The body of this octupus rarely reaches the size of a small melon, but it is usually visible from a distance because of its bright red colour and the flashes of lights that can be seen through its skin when it moves. This light is due to the bioluminescence of the animal's ink, that is both a bioluminescent fluid and a mild urticant potent enough to stun a small pray for a few minutes.   Its bioluminescence is activated by motion and it is used both as a defensive mechanism to dazzle its predators and as a lure to attract the small fishes that are its favourite prey. Once the fish gets close, attracted by the intermittent lights, the crimson squid attacks it with its two long tentacles that are armed with hooks that can inject the urticant substance.   Some adventurous chefs experimented with the meat of the octopus and the few people who had the chance to taste it report it to be tender and tasty, but not worth the effort or price. In addition to its unaffordable price, there is also the potentially annoying side effect that any ink still remaining inside the dish, can cause it to numb the tongue and mouth and to give them a flashy colour for a few hours afterwards.   The animal lives at depths of 50-70 meters, in crevices along the submarine portion of the islands and in submarine reefs, and the makarids of Clan Zemesh go to extreme lenghts and dangers to capture a few exemplars to supply their stock of the precious ink.   When a makarid in the clan is deemed worthy of the rank of Izir or Miyik, in fact, they get their lineage tattoos decorated with intricate embellishments with the colour changing ink. The process of acquiring the ink is deemed so difficult that only a few people are allowed to dive for it per generation and only one single octopus is capture every 5-7 years.

Okay, but flashy mouth is kind of cool though.   I love them. <3
