Sand Sled Vehicle in Hijr | World Anvil

Sand Sled

"The sled was a basic, though instrumental tool in the settlement of the Great Sand Sea. As cart wheels often have trouble in loose sand, and many animals do not like the heat, having a method for transporting large quantities of goods or materials over the harsh terrain was of utmost importance!" - 'On settling sands', by Eletis Ma'Alta.   Construction of these valuable vehicles varies immensely, as does their cost. Some are simple and small, little more than slats of wood with copper "feet" to keep the woods from being sanded off by the ground, these can be found readily and tend to cost no more than a few Gold coins. Others are large constructions, similar in size and shape to a covered wagon, with long steel runners under them to keep the entire vehicle lifted feet above the ground. These are prohibitively expensive for most, but a sound investment for many desert trade caravans. Many sleds have attachment points for axles or wheels, so it can still be used in areas where pulling it across the ground would be less effective.   While not originally from the Great Sand Sea, this vehicle type was mastered and best utilized by the Sandiid peoples of the desert, and is still in use by most peoples of this region even to this day. The first recorded use of such an item in this region comes from drawings in a tomb, depicting a group of slaves transporting a large Al'Kemri statue across the desert.
