Dwarf

"The eldest race, born of the Fires and stone of the earth (or their written histories say). Steeped in tradition, the Dwarves are the proud descendants of the Uldoth, and still hold the largest cities." - A census of Hijr, by Mel Atoniin, Chief Genealogist at the Spire.   The dwarves of Hijr can be (loosely) categorized as one of three major geneologies;
  • Cliff or Mountain Dwarf - Directly descended from the oldest Dwarf Kings. Strong and hardy, accustomed to a difficult life in rugged terrain. Probably on the tall side (for a dwarf), and tend toward lighter skin coloration and fiery red hair.
  • Hill or Valley Dwarf - Descending from the oldest lines of smiths and clerics, they have keen senses, deep intuition, and remarkable resilience. Stockier than their mountain cousins, and tending to have darker skin and hair.
  • Gray Dwarf or Duergar - Living deep in the Underdark, after delving deeper than any other dwarves. They were enslaved by beings of infinite cruelty for generations, although they eventually won their freedom, these grim, ashen-skinned dwarves now take slaves of their own and are as tyrannical as their former masters. Physically similar to other dwarves in some ways, duergar are wiry and lean, with black eyes and bald heads, with the males growing long, unkempt, gray beards.
  Even with the assistance of these three vast categories, dwarves are a varied and independent people. Customs and traditions in one village may be almost completely different from another, but most share a common belief in Honor, Honesty and Hard Work.
