Pity's Gruel

Pity's Gruel is dispensed daily outside Harriet's Pie Shop to any person of the County of Herrir appearing at sunrise and requesting it.

History

This is a traditonal form of charity dispensed, originally, from the gate of the Manor House but later in the Marketplace in Count's Yardham. It is funded by the Count of Herrir.

Execution

The indigent must appear in the Marketplace near dawn: before the sun reaches the stones of the square. (Exactly at dawn wouldn't work as many intended recipients are excluded from the town by night and the gates don't re-open until dawn).

Here the gruel is served by one of the townsfolk (usually Harriet Sweet) - one scoop each - to any that formally ask for "A scoop of Pity's Gruel".

The content of the Gruel is at the whim of the cook - but as the Countess of Herrir sends her maids at intervals (she has once come in person) to report on the contents and quality - some discretion is needed.
