The forges
The Forges are the blazing, chaotic industrial core of zyrokhil—equal parts foundry, labyrinth, and city within a city. Lit by magical hearths and burning with ceaseless ambition, the district is defined by smoke-choked air, roaring machinery, and stark contrasts of wealth and poverty. It’s a place where towering chimneys compete with tangled slums for space above the vast Mouth of the city, and where ancient dwarven tradition collides with the desperation of survival and the thrill of new beginnings. Every hour, the district thrums with the clangor of hammers and the screech of machinery; the air is thick with heat, soot, and ambition. Here, the boundary between progress and peril is razor-thin. The Forges feel like a living engine—raw, unpredictable, and vital—where hope and hardship walk hand in hand. From the moment you enter, you sense both the promise of invention and the desperation of those who fuel it: a place as dangerous as it is essential, always on the cusp of riot or renaissance.
Geography
Nestled in the lowest basin of The bowls, the Forges coil tightly around zyrokhil’s greatest wound and asset: the Mouth of the city, a vast mine pit that plunges straight into the darkness below. Once left open to the sky, the Mouth is now covered by a monumental iron grate, groaning open beneath the outstretched arms of monstrous cranes since the return of magic. It is here, at the city’s deepest point, that industry thrives both above and below the surface.
Directly beneath the Mouth lies the undercity—a cavernous subterranean complex riddled with workshops, rail tracks, and echoing stone chambers. Down here, mechanists and miners toil in torchlit gloom while pulleys, winches, and rail-mounted cranes haul not just ore and rubble, but entire constructs and engines assembled in the city’s mechanical depths. With each rattling, gear-clanking procession, the work of the undercity rises to daylight: machinery and constructs swinging skyward to fuel the city’s relentless industry.
All around the rim of the Mouth, the land rises steeply, ringed by the most impressive workshops—fortresses of stone, glass, and iron, where master smiths and ancient dwarven guilds ply their trade. The air in this district pulses with energy, lit by the glow of arcane furnaces and the rumble of steam-powered lifts. Presiding over it all is the “Lips,” the Forges’ most notorious tavern, standing sentinel at the Mouth’s edge—a magnet for celebration, conspiracy, and the settling of scores.
As you move outward from this industrial hub, the grandeur quickly fades. Workshops give way to sweatshops and sprawling warehouses, where the city’s working class churns out goods and mends the machinery of empire. The air is alive with the ceaseless drone of gears and the hiss of pistons, while rail tracks and conveyor belts crisscross every open space, ferrying raw ore, spare parts, and the occasional unlucky soul.
Above and between these smokestacks and forges, a precarious world of the desperate clings to life. Families live in shacks suspended from ropes and latticed wood, swaying high above the ground—some never touching solid earth, spending their days atop pipes and beams, connected by a trembling web of bridges. It is a world of perpetual haze, where the bold or the desperate make their homes close to the warmth (and danger) of the forges’ breath.
Who lives where is dictated by lineage, luck, and labor. The master artisans and the proudest dwarven families command the heights around the Mouth, their status secured by skill and history. Ambitious tradesfolk and skilled workers crowd the middle districts, angling for space and a glimpse of opportunity. The poor, the orphaned, and the outcast dangle—literally—between chimney and sky, scraping by in the suspended hovels or burrowing into the undercity’s shadows. But no matter where they dwell, all are drawn by the Mouth’s hunger and promise; its cavernous depths and rising cranes define every facet of life in the Forges.
History
The Forges began as a marvel of dwarven ambition, carved into the earth at the city’s founding, then expanded by centuries of industry and arcane engineering. Originally, the district fell under the strict order of The Gold administration, its processes watched closely by the enchanters of the Court of gems. Yet, beneath the veneer of bureaucracy, true control was wielded by the ancient guilds and dwarven clans, who owned both the secrets of the forge and the loyalty of the workers.
When the city’s gates slammed shut, the Mouth of the city was sealed by a massive grate, and the outside world vanished. Trade dried up, ore ran out, and the forges dimmed. The Gold administration’s power crumbled in the face of scarcity, and the dwarven guilds—now acting as the Commune of industry—took over, struggling to maintain order and hope as the machines fell silent one by one. At the same time, the Bowlscrapers, an alliance of laborers and street gangs, fought to claim the industrial quarter for themselves, leading to skirmishes and intrigue in the darkness beneath the chimneys. In the end, little could be done; most fires went cold, and the Forges survived only by scavenging, repurposing, and the stubborn refusal of its people to give up.
Everything changed when magic returned. With new power, the immense cranes groaned back to life, and the Mouth’s ancient grate opened once more. The magical hearths roared to life, and smoke once again curled skyward from every chimney. Old rivalries flared as opportunity beckoned: the guilds, the Commune, the Bowlscrapers, and countless outsiders all returned, eager to claim a piece of the city’s rebirth. Today, the Forges burn bright and hungry, their fires signaling both a return to greatness and the start of a new, uncertain struggle for control.
