Tower of Firthim

The Tower of Firthim stands as a solitary sentinel on the northern coastline of Mar Mabon, just beyond the town of Tabann. Serving as both a lookout tower and a lighthouse, its purpose is to safeguard the bustling maritime routes of the Mabon Channel and to watch for any potential threats approaching from the treacherous waters.   Rising above the rocky shoreline, the tower’s circular design is constructed from the same grey-white stone as many other coastal fortifications. A winding ramp spirals around the exterior of the tower, ascending gently from the base to the beacon chamber at the summit. This distinctive feature grants those patrolling the structure a clear view of both the sea and the surrounding coastline as they ascend. The ramp also provides ample space for transporting supplies up and down the tower, a consideration that has made maintaining the structure more efficient for the guards who man it. Heavy doors open at intervals along the ramp, granting access to the inner chambers, which include storerooms, guard quarters, and a signal room.   The beacon chamber at the top of the tower houses a large brass reflector and an ever-burning flame, its light sweeping across the waves to guide sailors safely into port. The flame, maintained through a mix of local wood and imported oil, shines brightest on stormy nights when the waters are at their most treacherous. When weather conditions are favourable, watchmen signal ships using coloured lanterns, directing them away from the submerged rocks that have claimed many vessels over the years. Despite its age, the tower remains well-maintained under the authority of Tabann’s Master, who assigns squads from the town’s guards to serve here on rotating shifts.
