Toad

Toads are a common amphibian species found throughout the drier environments of Helerin. These stout, warty creatures are known for their resilience and adaptability, thriving in regions with less constant access to water compared to frogs. Though they are often overshadowed by their much larger relative, the Noddumm, toads play a crucial role in controlling insect populations and are well-adapted to surviving in harsher, drier conditions.

Physical Appearance

Toads in Helerin are typically larger than frogs, with adults growing up to 8 to 10 inches in length. Their skin is dry, rough, and warty, usually in shades of brown, gray, or dark green, helping them blend into the muddy, rocky, or dry surroundings where they make their homes.   Toads have squat, muscular bodies, with short limbs well-suited for crawling or making short hops rather than long leaps. Unlike frogs, toads have less webbing between their toes, as they spend more time on land. Their eyes are large and often golden, with horizontal pupils that give them a distinct, watchful appearance.

Habitat

Toads are most commonly found in drier environments such as grasslands, forests, and even arid regions. They prefer areas with access to water for breeding, but can be found far from permanent water sources, using temporary pools or seasonal rains to sustain themselves.   In Teros, toads inhabit the edges of the Festermere Swamps and the foothills of the Redpeak Mountains. In Remon, they are found in the more arid regions, such as the Plains of Daraneen and the Stonelands, where they burrow into the ground to escape the heat.   In Forbin, toads are more common in forested regions like the Nythran Forest and in the rolling hills of the Amber Plains, while in Mar Mabon, they can be found in the drier sections of the island, particularly around the Gathoran Sands and Curmon Desert.

Behaviour

Toads are nocturnal creatures, spending the day hidden in burrows, under rocks, or within dense vegetation to avoid predators and the sun. At night, they emerge to hunt for insects, small invertebrates, and even smaller amphibians. Toads are solitary creatures and are highly territorial, particularly during breeding seasons when they gather at temporary water sources to mate and lay their eggs.   Unlike rogs, toads prefer to crawl or make short hops rather than leap great distances, relying on their camouflage and warty appearance to avoid predators. They secrete a mildly toxic substance from their skin that deters many would-be attackers, although it is not as potent as the venom of their larger cousin, the Noddumm.

Geographic Distribution

Toads are widespread across the archipelago, though their populations are densest in regions that combine drier conditions with seasonal access to water.   In Teros Major, they can be found in the foothills of the Redpeak Mountains and along the drier edges of the Festermere Swamps. In Remon, toads are prevalent in the arid Plains of Daraneen and the hilly Stonelands. In Forbin, they are more common in the hills and forests, such as the Nythran Forest and the Amber Plains, where they find plenty of hiding places and insect prey. In Mar Mabon, toads are found in the drier, more arid regions like the Gathoran Sands and Curmon Desert.

Interaction with People

Toads are generally regarded as harmless and are often seen as a symbol of endurance and adaptability in Helerin’s various cultures. Their ability to thrive in tough conditions and their nocturnal habits make them less visible to people, though farmers often appreciate their role in controlling insect populations.   In some regions, toads are associated with fertility and rain, and their presence near homes or fields is considered a good omen for crops. However, handling toads is often avoided due to the mild toxins they secrete, which can cause skin irritation if touched.   Unlike the more formidable Noddumm, toads pose no threat to people and are generally left undisturbed in their habitats.
