Use of mercenaries

Mercenaries have been used throughout Helerin's history to supplement (or even replace) traditional military forces. Loyalty is bought with coin, and so is often negotiable and unreliable.
In the War of Salvation, mercenaries were engaged by all sides. In the years, conflicts have been smaller in scale and less frequent, but a number of mercenary forces still operate. These are largely used to guard the interests and property of wealthy merchants or nobles, but will occasionally be tasked with more aggressive or acquisitive operations.

Vizrin Stonescales

The Vizrin Stonescales are a mercenary band in southern Teros. They are led by the fierce Boma, Kalgodan Harr and include many seasoned fighers.

Blades of Ashanok

The Blades of Ashanok are a mercenary band in Mar Miskun, based in the city of Ashanok. Their leader is Hathar Merreshan. They are a mounted and highly-mobile force.

Swords of Gilrim

The Swords of Gilrim are a mercenary force in Forbin. They are based in Hapros on the west coast. Their leader is the Keeva ex-soldier, Jubas Jolarr.
The swords are known for their skirmishing ability in difficult terrain.

Blackstaves

The Blackstaves are a small mercenary band of mages. They are based in Orbont and are led by the Channeler Ollend Kalaboss.

Mabon Jackals

The Mabon Jackals are a mercenary force in Mar Mabon. They are drawn in part from local tribes, and operate out of Gathansin. Their leader is the skilled warrior Vinara Sollindin.
The Jackals have a reputation as a swift and savage force.
