Magical Forces

Origins of magic

Millenia ago, when the Gods walked the mortal realms, the goddess Dassantarra was slain by a mortal, Tekkaron. Her death released her divine power into the living realms, infusing places and people with varying degrees of power.   Dassantarra's own realm became a wild, ungoverned place, and the boundary between it and the living lands was weakened; indeed, some of its inhabitants slipped through into the lands of the mortals. Those mortals gifted with magical powers may also reach through that boundary, drawing on the energies of Dassantarra's realm and calling to its denizens.   See also: Realm of Magic

Talents

Those that study the use of magic generally pursue one of the six Talents. It is important to note that these categories are not actual subdivisions within magic itself, but are instead affinities of similar intent and connected concepts.   See also: Use of magic

Weaving

Weavers create visions and illusions, lights and sounds. Their magic baffles the senses, confounding perception. While some weavers use their art for entertainment or self-preservation, others deploy tricks and deception for personal gain.

Calling

Callers can reach across the boundaries of the physical world, bringing forth creatures from the magical realm. Their skill lies is summoning, binding, and banishment.

Shaping

Shapers use magic to change the physical world. Their powers allow them to build, transform, and animate.

Channeling

Channelers wield magic as a weapon, directing scorching fires or chilling ice. They can also harness the kinetic powers of magic to move objects with force and speed.

Enchanting

Enchanters use magic as a force of mental control, persuading, steering, or reading the minds of others, and fortifying their own mental focus. While some may use their powers to encourage, bolster, or understand, others use their magic to dominate.

Guarding

Guardians use magic as force of growth and renewal. Some guardians live amongst people as healers, while others turn their attention to the natural world.

Magic in society

Those without magical talents will typically understand little about how magic works, its limitations, or how skills are developed. Anything uncanny or unexplained may be ascribed to magic. While mages seeking to help those around them are generally welcomed in society, if rarely trusted.   Mages may take significant roles within public life or in military forces, although many prefer to remain outside society, or choose to form collectives for mutual benefit.   See also: Magic in society
