Mageblight
Causes
Mageblight is an enigmatic condition with no known definitive cause. It is often linked to excessive or reckless use of magic, leading many to believe it results from an overexertion of magical energies or exposure to unstable magical forces. Despite its association with magic use, Mageblight is not contagious and appears to exclusively affect magic practitioners. Mageblight does not affect Shanda, a fact that has intrigued scholars of both magic and medicine. Theories suggest their unique physiology or limited magical proclivity renders them immune.Symptoms
The symptoms of Mageblight are both physical and magical in nature:Physical symptoms
Sufferers experience extreme photosensitivity, making sunlight and bright light painful to the eyes. Over time, the irises turn a pale grey, further reducing their ability to tolerate light.Magical symptoms
While afflicted, a mage's powers become significantly heightened but are much harder to control. Using magic becomes physically and mentally taxing, increasing the risk of harm to the caster and their surroundings.Treatment
There is no direct cure for Mageblight. The most effective treatment is avoiding the use of magic entirely, allowing the afflicted individual’s body and magical reserves to recover naturally. Rest and avoidance of bright light can help alleviate symptoms. Guardians with advanced healing abilities may attempt to ease the strain on the sufferer, though this does not directly cure the condition. Herbal remedies, such as elixirs made from Bluewort root, may aid in promoting rest and calming the nervous system, indirectly supporting recovery. However, these treatments are palliative rather than curative.Prognosis
Recovery is generally achieved over several weeks if magic is avoided entirely. However, continued exposure to magic or overuse during this period can worsen the condition, potentially leading to uncontrolled magical outbursts. In rare cases, such outbursts may prove fatal, either to the caster or those nearby.
