Fort Samoshan
Fort Samoshan stands as a sturdy and unassuming stronghold along the northern approach to the capital city of Holdras. Though not vast in scale, the castle’s position is strategically significant, serving as a watchpoint and early warning post for any activity along the northern roads leading to the capital. Its grey stone walls and squat towers are well-maintained, a testament to its historic role in defending Holdras from past incursions. The fort’s modest size belies its importance, for Fort Samoshan has long been the first line of defence against any threat to the heart of Jalussan.
The fort’s architecture reflects its utilitarian purpose. A central keep is flanked by two square towers that provide ample visibility over the surrounding plains and forested hills. The walls, reinforced with local stone, form a solid barrier, and the iron gates are both imposing and resilient. Within, Fort Samoshan’s small garrison trains daily, ensuring that the fort remains ready to serve its purpose at a moment’s notice. The courtyard is filled with the sounds of sparring and the clang of metal on metal, while the lower levels house storerooms, a small armoury, and a command chamber.
Despite its continued vigilance, a shadow has recently fallen over Fort Samoshan. Lady Kalthia Mandonn, the current ruler of the castle and a respected noblewoman, has been struck by a mysterious and debilitating ailment. Once a vibrant and commanding presence, Lady Mandonn has fallen mute and unresponsive, her eyes vacant and her movements sluggish. Her condition has baffled the fort’s healer and has led to growing unease among the garrison and local populace. Whispers of foul play, whether magical or mundane, spread through the halls, casting a pall over the once-determined morale of the fort’s defenders.
