Criminal activity

Helerin's realms are witness to a range of criminal activities. These crimes range from economic offences such as racketeering and smuggling to more violent acts including piracy and murder.   See also: Criminal organisations

Types of criminal activity

Racketeering

This involves organised groups running illegal businesses or protection schemes. Often, racketeering is connected to other criminal activities like extortion and money laundering.

Theft

Commonplace across Helerin, theft ranges from petty pickpocketing in crowded markets to muggings or even the daring burglaries of wealthy estates.

Banditry

In rural and less patrolled regions, banditry thrives. Travellers and trade caravans frequently fall victim to these well-armed, aggressive groups.   See also: Warlords, brigands, and bandits

Piracy

The waters of Helerin are not only a means of trade but also a venue for piracy. Pirates disrupt trade routes, targeting merchant ships for their cargoes.   See also: Piracy

Smuggling

The clandestine movement of goods aims to evade taxation or move illicit products. Smugglers often employ secret routes and hidden compartments and sometimes corrupt officials to facilitate their activities.   See also: Smuggling

Treason and Sedition

Acts against the state, such as treason and sedition, are taken seriously. These crimes involve attempts to overthrow or undermine the authority of the ruling powers.   There are many subversive and rebel groups seeking to alter the balance of power in the lands of Helerin.   See also: Dissidents and subversives

Kidnapping and Ransom

This crime, often targeting the wealthy or their relatives, aims to secure large ransoms. It's not uncommon in politically unstable regions.

Prostitution

From courtesans to street workers, prostitutes offer companionship and sexual services. Most towns and all cities will have at least one brothel.

Violent Crimes, Rape, and Murder

These heinous crimes are unfortunately prevalent across various regions of Helerin, demanding strict and swift justice measures.   Hired assassins are often used to eliminate rivals and opponents.

Justice and punishment

The approach to justice and punishment in Helerin varies by the type of crime and the region in which it was committed. Generally, more serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and high-seas piracy receive the harshest punishments, including imprisonment, forced labour, or even capital punishment.   Lesser offences might be settled with fines or short-term imprisonment.   See also: Law and order
