Charthol Keep
Perched precariously on the cliffs of the Giramon Coast, the ruins of Charthol Keep gaze out over the turbulent waters of the Straits of Charthol. Once a mighty bastion of the Thalissian Empire, the keep now stands abandoned and crumbling, its thick stone walls succumbing to centuries of decay and erosion.
Charthol Keep was built in the 9th century as a defensive outpost, designed to protect the eastern approaches to Mar Miskun and control maritime traffic passing through the treacherous straits. Its strategic position allowed it to keep watch over both the Straits and the Giramon Coast, serving as a deterrent to pirates and raiders.
The keep’s architecture was as formidable as its purpose, with multiple levels, imposing walls, and several sturdy towers. The central bastion was the heart of the fortress, its thick foundations anchored deep into the rocky promontory. Caves beneath the keep led to a network of tunnels that once served as storerooms and secret routes, providing secure access to the lower levels and hidden chambers. A cracked and crumbling jetty still juts out from the northern cliff, where supply ships once moored. The path leading up from the jetty to the keep’s main gate is now little more than a treacherous, overgrown trail, barely navigable even by the most intrepid explorers.
The upper levels of the keep are mostly destroyed, with only a few sections of wall and broken towers remaining to hint at its former grandeur. The lower levels, however, are still largely intact, though the passage of time has made them hazardous to explore. The Thrasse, leathery-winged predators known for their aggression and pack-hunting behaviour, have nested within the sea caves and occasionally venture into the ruins, making any attempt to access the lower levels fraught with danger.
