Castle Varathis
Castle Varathis rises at the western end of Orbont's busy harbour, a multi-tiered fortress that dominates the city’s skyline with its tall spires and sweeping arches.
The castle’s sandstone walls gleam a soft gold in the sun, and its elegant design blends defensive strength with an almost delicate grace. A series of interconnected courtyards and balconies overlook the bustling port below, where merchants and traders from across the archipelago gather to ply their wares.
A wide ramp spirals around the lower levels of the castle, leading up to a grand arched entrance that features intricate carvings of ships and sea creatures. Just inside, a tranquil courtyard with a long reflecting pool offers a moment of calm amidst the castle’s imposing presence. Beyond the courtyard, a series of shaded colonnades provide access to the castle’s upper levels, each connected by gently sloping ramps in place of stairs.
The main keep of Castle Varathis rises above the harbour, its balconies and terraces granting a sweeping view of the Mabon Channel. At night, the castle’s high lanterns serve as a beacon for ships navigating the channel’s treacherous waters.
Inside, the Great Hall is an impressive space where the Lord of Orbont, Tormus Trivek, now holds court. The hall’s ceiling arches high overhead, supported by slender columns adorned with the Trivek family’s sigil: a stylised sun setting behind waves. Colourful banners line the walls, reflecting the vibrant trade and wealth of Orbont, while a grand throne of dark wood and polished brass dominates the dais at the hall’s far end.
Tormus, known as ‘Tormus the Handsome,’ is a far more charming ruler than his scheming father who he has succeeded. He uses his looks and charisma to great effect, navigating Orbont’s labyrinthine politics with an ease that belies his young age. His rule may be new, but already whispers fill the castle’s halls: of rivals quietly falling from favour, of old debts being called in, and of schemes brewing behind the closed doors of the highest spires.
Commander Varodeen is Trivek's military chief, leading Orbont's garrison stationed within the castle.
