The 101 Tales of Chaewon
The 101 Tales of Chaewon is a literary collection of folk and house tales authored by Moon Chaewon. The volumes were first published published from 753–764 MOD and are considered one of the most famous works of the White Lotus Movement and an integral part of classic Yashidal literature canon.
The first publication consisted of four volumes with 25 tales in the first three and 26 tales in the last volume in Manyeong script. Throughout the centuries, order of the individual tales and size of volumes were revised according to morals and convenience for the reader and have spawned multiple illustrated and unillustrated editions that were also translated into other languages.
The author intentionally removed her family name from her work so to make it appear as non-threatening as possible to the authorities, an especially intelligent move since the underlying messages of the curated tales heavily criticised the Yashin regime and its predecessors as well as the general ruling nobility.
Historical Details
Public Reaction
The 101 Tales of Chaewon had a generally positive reaction from the masses. It was written in Manyeong alphabet which made it easier to read for the common folk compared to the more complicated characters used in in Yuten and Fuyuan documents, although the Manyeong dialect had to be altered to spread more widely amongst the newly-founded nation of Yashida.
Since it was a collection of folk tales, Yashidal officials didn't deem it important enough to intervene and allowed the spread of these cultural cornerstones, giving way for other authors and literary scholars from the other provinces to follow suit and publishing in Manyeong script.
