The Heirs of the Crossroads

A Position of Privilege: The Players are the people who stand between the two worlds. Aside from the gods, they are the most influential figures in Jujiro City.   As a Citizen of the "Real World" who has entered the UnderGround, you have the imagination and flexibility of thought needed to change your perceptions of yourself. This allows you to influence your appearance and abilities within the UG. This projection of yourself that you utilize to do this is called a Persona.   As a Denizen of the UG your Persona embodies a Legend and can manifest it in unique ways; changing their appearance in the RG and utilizing powerful abilities.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

A Player sees the RG by default but bits of the UG will begin to bleed in over time. It's easy to be lost entirely to the perceptual world as it often becomes more real over time.

Civilization and Culture

History

Seeing the World For the First Time: Seeing into the UnderGround doesn't require you to be a player. Manipulating perceptions of you and bringing the UG to the Real World, does. In order to do the latter, a Visitor from the RG must make the perceptual world a part of themselves. There are three ways that usually happens.   The Storied -Self Actualization
A Shadow is a being that was originally born from you. It's a Reflection that has become independent of your perspective on yourself. The opinions of others have drifted so far from your send of self that the Reflection isn't even recognizable as you anymore. While you were its starting point it's a true Denizen of the UG now. If you confront the Shadow and integrate the disparate image with yourself, you can stand on the threshold of the two worlds.   This can be a difficult process. Shadows come into existence by diverging so widely from your perceptions of yourself that they stopped being identifiable with you at all. In order to merge with it, the would-be Player must identify with the Shadow and come to understand the perspectives that make it what it is. Only accepting and embracing the dissonant image can the Player take control of it and make the warped mirror a source of power.   The Mantled - Assimilation Some Cousins want more than to keep existing. Many wane in power over the years and are desperate to get it back. When a Denizen has lost power they once had, they have few options other than hoping the Citizenry of the city decide to popularize its legend. One of their best tricks left is to identify with a Visitor and together become a Player.   This is the most contractual means of acquiring a Persona. A promise is exchanged and the Citizen agrees to take on the title and legend of the Cousin. In exchange, the Denizen becomes one with the Player and becomes a source of power. This deal can just as easily be a genuine partnership or a horrific act of extortion on either side. The life of a Mantled can begin as a difficult one, as the Denizen they merge with comes with their own complicated history and the Persona that has taken the place of their Reflection may have a personality not entirely in their control.   The Exalted - Identification The Higher Powers do not typically walk the physical world and even the Denizens that descend as servants of the Authorities typically don't become physically manifested. But sometimes when the need arises or an individual is found that so deeply resonates with the Domain's ideals, the Powers may choose to Uplift a Player, infusing their Reflection with divine essence and creating new Persona.   The life of the Exalted comes with the heaviest burden. There is an Authority to whom you must answer and may be a hierarchy they now find themselves embedded in.   Mechanics: benefits
Each option for a Player's Origin grants a unique benefit .
  • Storied Players have greater a profound sense of self and are more able to influence their Persona and themselves than others: They are granted 3 Temporary Willpower Points at the beginning of each game. These may be used as normal Willpower and are used first and may allow a Player to have more Willpower than normally allowed by their Resolve score. They are not renewed by rest.
  • Mantled Players have adopted a Legend that has a past for good or ill. Their story is inherently more complex to start than others: They may begin play with one extra Card at the Green level. They also begin with 2 Weaknesses. If curse is chosen as a weakness, then the Curse will require a Purple card to dispel it.
  • Exalted Players are born from the the investment of Authority and are granted some of that authority themselves: Exalted Players begin play with a Rule card, a Silver token empowered by their Patron. They begin with the Obligation Weakness and it may not be removed or ignored so long as the Player holds the Rule card.

Staying Grounded: You were an ordinary person. Your background, where you live, where you work or study, the people you know - all important facets to keep in mind, because while you step into the Underground and brave the Dreamscape, you never really leave the RG. While you make yourself aside and below, don’t forget who you are back home.
