Dunstan Harlow
From a minor knightly house in the holdings of the Allisters, Dunstan Harlow was already one of the most skilled and experienced Cranwich Rangers before the war. This elite group of warriors has traditionally been led by the head of House Allister, and is responsible for safeguarding the Farandun Hills. This twisting maze of ragged, steep hills is notoriously dangerous and difficult to navigate, but is nonetheless the easiest access point into the Autumnvale from the mountains, and the East. In ages past it was the site of bitter wars between the men of the Autumnvale and the Orcish tribes. One of the duties of the Rangers was to monitor the winding paths through the craggy hills, and block all but a select few with rockfalls. At the start of the war, Bergeaux sent an army through the Farandun Hills in an attempt to take the Autumnvale by surprise. Dunstan Harlow was among the rangers that Thrysten Allister led into the hills to stop them, and one of the few that returned from those battles.
As one of the last of the pre-war Cranwich Rangers, and a man with decades of combat, leadership, and wilderness experience, Dunstan Harlow is an invaluable asset to the Autumnvale. Together with the other survivors of the Farandun Hills, he has taken promising recruits from the ranks of the fiefdom’s troops to try to rebuild the Cranwich Rangers. He served as a mentor to Leighton Allister, especially in the early days of the war, after the burden of command was thrust on the young lord upon the death of his father. He remains Allister’s most trusted and capable comrade in the field. He is gruff, serious, and no-nonsense in behaviour, while possessing considerable skill in combat, tracking, fieldcraft and survival. He is especially swift, deadly, and efficient in single combat. His age and long years of service and war have rendered him somewhat dour and jaded, but have failed to break his resolve and determination. As he grows old, he both longs for, and fears, the coming of peace to the Autumnvale. While he is tired, he has known no other life but that of a ranger, fighting more often than not. Despite his advancing years, Harlow retains a lean and muscular build, keen senses, and a quick wit, having seen more of the present war than perhaps any man living.
