Otham, City of Wealth and Secrets

In the Drowned Lands there is a place untouched by and unconcerned with the warring lords. This is Otham, a sprawling trade city in the south of the Drowned Lands actually on an island close to Elohkar.   Thousands flock to Otham not only to trade items, products, and oddities but to trade knowledge and secrets because this is the home of the god of hidden knowledge and secrets, Yor. Here in his city, Yor flits about dispensing knowledge on whims to anyone who may be passing by.

Demographics

Mostly southerners come here to Otham but no one is turned away because everyone seeks and benefits from knowledge so Elohkarn, elves from Fal Morum, even monstrous humanoids from Quor come seeking insight and wealth

Government

Otham is ruled by Yor in name. Although the god takes an interesting approach to ruling. The god of secrets leaves the day to day minutiae and administration to his angels.   The Counsel of Mysteries, seven of Yor's most powerful, trusted, and enigmatic seraphs, direct Otham.

Defences

No one would darn attack Otham not for its defenses but because someone inside there is a god, a god with untold knowledge and power, that no one wants angered with them. Yor wanders the city in disguise. There is no telling which passerby he could be: the prince from the faraway land, the blacksmith's daughter, or even the one eyed beggar.   Even with the dissuasion of angering a god, Otham has considerable defences: Impressive walls matched with an equally impressive armada. In addition to these mundane defences, Yor's numerous clerics, priests, paladins, and angels stand ready to defend the city of their god.

Industry & Trade

Otham is a hub of industry and trade. As the largest port city in Altir rivaling even Paragon, the capital of the Danitharn monarchy, Otham's sheltered harbor attracts ambassadors from Elhokarn, long ships from Vaek, even vessels from the far off continent of Ortum. In the streets, markets, and businesses of Otham anything and everything is bought and sold, from simply produce and staples, to precious stones and rare metals. Ancient tomes and grimoires, to dragon hearts and lost artifacts. Even knowledge itself can be bought for gold and silver.

Infrastructure

Otham is covered in places of learning: wizard towers, libraries, colleges, monasteries, and churches abound but it is also full of artisan shops. The city is also full of expansive courtyards, vaulting bridges, grand cathedrals, smithies and laboratories.   As a port city Otham has quite extensive docks, shipping yards, shipyards and dry-docks, as well as a sprawling promenade where trade and commerce are conducted.

History

In the last age the gods died. The survivors of what every calamity befell them descended to Haunt. There were four: Elistar, Yor, Crosis, and Arris. Each founded a city which people flocked. These became known as the God-Cities. Yor's city of Otham lies on the southern edge of the Drowned Lands on an island removed from the territory of the squabbling lords.
