The Green Abyss Myth in Hanzelot | World Anvil

The Green Abyss

The Tale

Vinmar descended from the sky and created their beloved children, She was a kind goddess always ready to help their children to discover the secrets of their new home. They were happy under her protection. They lived in harmony, happy, innocent children learning to talk, to think to play and grow old together.

The peace they shared didn't last forever. One day, her Mother Vinmar announced she should leave them to return to her true dimension in the sky. They didn't need to worry. Vinmar will choose a new leader for them to follow and love. A perfect Queen to rule them all.

When they asked how she will choose a new Queen Vinmar said: "She must be loyal to me and willing to follow me to the depths of the Green Abyss" That was the name of the lake and waterfall where Vinmar was the only one allowed to bathe and swim.

Vinmar and her children gathered around the lake. Her followers saw her gliding above the water and when she was in the center of the lake the sky illuminated full of green lights. The stars were on fire. She extended her arms in front of her and her face disappeared behind a glowing orb. The people were scared, they had never seen such a display of power from her. Vinmar spoke: "One of you must be brave enough to follow me. She and all her descendants will rule this land to all eternity." The globe in her hands shone even brighter. The sky vibrated with the intensity of the lights. One woman, Dasin, walked into the lake and sunk to the depths along with Vinmar.

The sky changed to its natural dull color and no one emerged. The people waited for a long time and when they were ready to give up, a new Queen emerged from the lake and walked towards them. She wasn't like Vinmar, but she was also powerful. Peace returned, for a time. Until it was broken.

The Kingdom

Until this day, descendants of that Queen Dasin have ruled the Irem Kingdom. The borders of the Kingdom have expanded and shrunk over the course of centuries according to periods of war, truce, peace and war again.

The Green Abyss continues to this day to be a sacred place where they hold the funerals and ceremony of coronation of every Queen and King.

The right to the throne was contested many times. In more than one occasion, an arrogant lord o lady tried to emulate the royal family's ability to survive the Green Abyss. Their bodies were never found. Presumably lost in the waterfall. Vinmar's promised punishment for anyone who dared to swim in her lake to dethrone Queen Dasin or her descendants.

The people of Irem are proud of the royal family and the progress of the Kingdom, maybe they're not always perfect, after all they are not gods, but they are blessed by the goddess with intelligence, charisma, kindness and do their best for their subject.

Not everyone is pleased with the royal family, enemies from other Kingdom are always scheming against them. Sometimes they succeed to kill one or two members, but never all of them. The lineages continue, the blessing is passing through generations despite of whoever they choose to marry and have children. The ability to pass Vinmar's final test is what keeps them in power. The ones who want to get rid of them swear there is a fraud waiting to be uncovered, their subjects believe in the power Vinmar gave to Queen Dasin, and she passed to her descendants is proof enough to maintain their loyalty.
The Waterfall
I will trust my fate to Vinmar
— Dasin's last words before becoming a Queen
-How they do it?
-Twenty minutes, one hour.
-Sometimes more!
-And they always come back.
-Not a hair out of place. As regal as ever.
-We must to find out how they do it.
— Schemers (and fools that'll end up dead)

Those pictures are beautiful, Melu! They really work with the story. I love that schemers that try to emulate the royals end up dead, because that shows there's definitely *something* to the myth.

This is a cool myth. I really liked description: "She wasn't like Vinmar, but she was also powerful."   Also, when I read about the people of Irem being proud of the ruling family, I thought: 'Yeah... except those people who think they're a$$holes!'
