Kraken Species in Hall of Doors - Ustehall | World Anvil

Kraken

"According to ancient legends, the Kraken are enormous creatures that can rival the size of most sea vessels. Powerful tentacles adorn their bodies, each possessing unmatched strength and dexterity. With precision and agility, they navigate the ocean's depths using these appendages. Their movements are both mesmerizing and terrifying."
— From Tales Of Darhi Teku - Told by Grandfather Tolin Markton

The Darhi Teku ocean is home to an extraordinary species that reigns supreme, the legendary Kraken. The awe-inspiring cephalopods embody the hidden dangers of the ocean. They have been captivating sailors and storytellers with their incredible presence.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Krakens are massive. They are larger than any land based creature and outweigh the largest whale by half again. They use their eight powerful tentacles to propel them through the ocean's depths. It's their playground.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduction for a Kraken is only possible after they die. The sole magic they possess is their power to generate their own offspring. With the magic released upon their death, each Kraken produces eight to ten fertilized eggs. Their need for magic to reproduce is the reason they're absent on low or null magic worlds.   The initial hatched egg will consume the other eggs to support its development. This is the new kraken taking the place of the old one that passed. It's a rare occurrence for two eggs to hatch simultaneously. A fight will ensue between them. The victor will slaughter and consume the other. This creates an opening for another kraken to hatch and consumed the ignored eggs. If any of the remain krakens escapes their sibling's appetite, the kraken population will increase by one. If not, the population size remains unchanged.
