The Architects

The Architects are the first truly magical beings to enter the world. They were invisible, immortal, enduring, and outside of physical space. One might call them Gods: their powers were seemingly limitless and they often acted the part of Gods when it fancied them.
All magic derives from them. They created all non-human races, created the afterlives, and created the immortals. Only four architects exist:

• Halcyon the Creator, who chose her own name and was most prolific of the Architects
• The Chimera, who took many forms and gave great boons and curses. A prolific creator and influencer as well.
• The Masked One, who often avoided states and empires and preferred to hold domain over death and the sea
• The Hidden One, who hid from the view of mortals entirely. They made cats and hell, though.

The Architects were known by few and understood by none. That said, they were fundamentally just people: fallible, arbitrary, and kind as people can be. While they operated on a much larger scale and with immense power, their minds were human. For millennia they watched over the planet, modifying it on whims.
And then, at year 0 of the calendar, they vanished. They mentioned some oncoming threat they sought to delay.
