Princess Maina Eramzir

Her Radiance, Maina Eramzir

Her heavenly radiance Maina Eramzir is the Princess of Ibaisha, a wealthy central kingdom of the heavenly empire of Zerua. She is graceful, stoic, and magically powerful- a perfect example of what every young aristocratic lady of Zerua should aspire to be. She is a savant in every field, they say: business, war, politics.   She keeps close tabs on her court, they say. Her dragomander is never seen, but invisibly watches as her second pair of eyes in the palace, they say. But only she knows the truth- and perhaps her Lunar Patron, Orchid of Blue, who watches from above.   While she has never said so, some would say she aspires for the emperor-ship of Zerua. She certainly has grand visions for a new Zerua: a Zerua that uses the military to protect merchants and corporations abroad, not fight pointless wars; a Zerua that seeks peace through trade. Some would call her a limited corporatist, as she favors giving rights to certain corporations with government oversight and cooperation (rather than the current emperor, who wants less corporate influence altogether). She supports legal reform, adoption of foreign technology, toleration of foreign influence, and limited economic reform for the most vulnerable populations.

Personal history

Maina was born into a cadet branch of the Eramzir family in Southern Ibaisha. Her parents were lesser sorcerers with minimal business experience and quarter-imperial-blood each, and they were thrilled when she bonded with one of the Dragomanders at a young age. She was sent North to the city of Etekamo for higher education at age eight, to be transferred to the main branch of the Ibaishan Imperial Eramzir. Eight was an unusually young age for a sorcerer or for sorcery training, but it was a rare chance to elevate their daughter into the ruling clique of Ibaisha.   Maina did not adjust well to the change at all. She was desperate to return to her parents, and saw bad behavior as the best way to be "sent back" to them. After offending the current ruling prince of Ibaisha, she was sent instead to the military to be trained as a war-sorcerer and future dragonlancer at age ten (this was not typical protocol, but a purely spiteful move on the prince's part). Easily the youngest candidate there, she was ruthlessly bullied for several years. But even though the harassment slowed her progress, she improved nonetheless. Things got better after three years, when she began using spells to modify her trainer's paperwork to allow her to return to the insulated academy at Azalek. From 13 to 16, she traveled between the Azalek dragonlancers and the Azalek court, growing in power and confidence. The court became her new home, a place where she could thrive by her magical talents alone - even as she grew to be accepted in the military, she always knew that she was vulnerable and out of place there. By the time that 1984 came around, she had almost escaped back into the world of magical study. And then the war with Esedeta broke out.   It was a nightmare, and one that she was thrown into without the level of training of the other dragonlancers. Incompetent commanders, terrible brutality, and what felt like a pointless war have Maina took her hatred of the military from a personal hatred to an ideology.   When she finally returned to Ibaisha in 1986 as the child-prodigy war hero, she had mastered social skills enough to present a bold face but was deeply emotionally unbalanced. Her need for validation and fear of attack manifested as paranoia and a vicious courtly instinct. These were rewarded by the courts, and she rose to prominence from 1986 to 1991 as a court favorite. She was forced to adapt to a variety of positions she had no training for (and possibly given to her with an expectation that she would fail), such as managing trade policy and budgets. She seemed certain to fail when it came to the treasury- a perfect promotion into failure intended to finally shoot down the court miracle child. But in her darkest hour, she prayed for a lifeline and one of the gods listened. A bodyguard assigned to protect her was switched through political machinations to a human paladin of Orchid of Blue named Mayara. Mayara was a young newly-minted paladin of Orchid who had committed herself to fighting for the Orchid faction of Zerua- and had been assigned to protect and recruit this up-and-comer. Mayara and Orchid provided Maina with the resources and help she needed to balance the impossibly convoluted budget of Ibaisha- and receive a visit to the Imperial Dragon Court.   Tragically, her position in the Dragon Court did not last long, as she was quickly noted for her military experience and deployed in the second Esedetan war, under Sophan Eramzir. She shared in his glory- or perhaps, he profited off of her competence. Either way, it seemed certain that she would rise alongside him even as she quietly resented his military fetishism.   After his ascension in 1998 to heir of the empire, Sophan recommended heavily that Maina be named heir to Ibaisha. She quickly became known as the Soon To Be Emperor's Favorite, and was nigh-worshiped as a possible Imperial Cabinet Member. She and her faction disposed of the sitting Prince of Ibaisha and she ascended in 2002 as Princess. She never did get that Imperial Cabinet position- but that is possibly because Sophan never did become a full member of the Orchid faction. He retained lunar independence- and rejected Orchid's call for peace with Esedeta.   As Sophan's militarism overcame his reformism, Maina began envisioning herself as Orchid's true agent and empress. She has become a leading figure in the faction: a powerful sorceress with a knack for intrigue, she is a frightening figure that Sophan wisely keeps at a distance.
