Courier Confederation
The Courier Confederation of Stildane was an ancient system of messengers and smugglers that crisscrossed the continent. It was founded as a way to coordinate resistance to the first Empire of Kizen and to pool arcane knowledge, but it lasted long after the empire fell.
During its centuries of service, the Couriers brought all parts of Stildane together in trade and cooperation. They were not a very centralized group, and some Couriers were more thieves than mailmen, but for the most part they were an integral institution for developing trade networks in Stildane.
Even though their days are over, they have left their mark on the land to this day. The wastelands are littered with their hideouts: secret doors and secure safe rooms in caves and underground, some still holding ancient loot. Many of these refuges are extremely simplistic; some are astonishingly complex. But only a very small number of people know the locations of all of them.
To find these hidden alcoves, there is a language of secret signs that the Courier Confederacy carved into nearby stones to subtly direct people in the right direction. This language, which was the calling card of the Confederacy, has become the gold standard for an international code known as 'Thieves' Cant'.
