Cherl
Free Stildanian commoners
Cherl is a legal status in Northern Stildane designating someone as a free commoner: neither serf nor noble.
A cherl is not tied to the land: they can move freely through the land for as long as they wish without facing chevage fines or potential pursuit as a fugitive. They can own their own land (though some kingdoms place limitations on how much). They can marry without incurring fees. They do not have levy or service requirements to a lord (though they may to a guild or urban community)
"City air makes you free," it is said. Laws on the topic vary from kingdom to kingdom, but the sentiment crosses political boundaries. Membership in an urban community is seen as a path to mobility, even in the most stiflingly feudal realm. In some realms, an "urban community" means any town - but in the Kingdom of Hain and its many vassal-states, only the largest cities guarantee freedom from serfdom for their residents.
