Lichfield
Lichfield is a large, heavily populated settlement in Alluvion, primarily populated by the undead and ever-living. In the Lichfield lingo, it is described as a necro-cosmo-megalopolis.
A well-terraced, gradual hill defines the surface.
Surrounded by an extraordinarily expensive ornate iron gate, which is patrolled and mined by border guards. Over 90% of this force is zombie labor, due to their ability to work long hours.
Generally gothic. Above-ground structures tend to be official, transportation-related, or residences of the affluent. The well-tended grounds are covered by gravestones; various cemetery structures; scenic but spooky torch-lit paths; well-manicured undead plants, trees and vines; imposing ornamental gates; marble fountains. The long Corpse Road bisects Lichfield, connecting two heavily defended, iron gates, one to the North and the other to the South, with Lichfield Customs placed in the center. Most Lichfielders persist underground, in successive layers of densely packed urban centers. Gothic. Marble and iron above ground. Plaster, wood, and white marble columns below.
Lichfield is cultural melting pot. It is defined by a cultural fascination with necromancers. Necromancers hold key positions in politics, religion, entertainment, and business. A common complaint is that necromancers benefit disproportionately from the practice of externship.
- Lichfield Customs. A single booth at the bisection of Corpse Road, which serves as a slow-moving queue for the constant stream of newly undead migrants. Mr. Bones, a self-animated skeleton stamps papers and activates a trap entrance. An ornate, oversized gate acts as a trap door. When the gate opens, the migrant falls into the abyss below it, which continues deep into the settlement proper.
- Boneyard Welcome Center. Half a league directly beneath Lichfield Customs.
- Athwart University campus.
