Guild of Wizardry Organization in Greyhawk | World Anvil

Guild of Wizardry

The Greyhawk Guild of Wizardry, based in the City of Greyhawk, is the largest and most extensive guild of magi in the Flanaess. It also claims to be the least political, secretive, or closed off of any mage guild.     While the Guild of Wizardry is interested in its own aggrandizement, it has no political agenda. The wizards are usually too busy with their own affairs to meddle too much in the politics of the city. Membership also does not require exclusive allegiance, and many hold another faction membership. Because of this, many magi across the Flanaess claim an affiliation with this guild.   In many places, membership in the guild is a source of prestige, due to the guild’s international fame. Over the last decade nearly a thousand active mages hold membership, though perhaps half that many are in the city at any one time and a majority of those are dabblers or virtually inactive. The city and guild have been essentially untouched by recent wars and it became a haven for many exiled practitioners.

Arcane Teachers

The Guild resides in their own pyramid but now also runs the famous bastion of learning – The University of Magical Arts. The UMA, a pyramid-shaped building, is an architectural wonder and its sheer sides and pointed crown are visible from many places in the district. Thought to be impregnable and of magical design, its vaults hold the most expansive collection of known magic items and of arcane texts in the Flanaess, including, it is believed, those of the legendary ‘Mad Archmage.’

Structure

Any proven practitioner of arcane magic is eligible to join the Guild of Wizardry.   Admission to the university requires another wizard’s recommendation, approval by a board of tutors, and an initial admission fee of 100 gp.   Rank benefits stack. That is, each rank retains benefits of the ranks beneath it.

Culture

The guild is founded on these principles:
  • Magic should be free to all
  • Knowledge is the truest kind of power
  • Arcane study is a never-ending and worthy endeavour
  • Anyone willing to learn magic should be taught
  • Magic should never be abused
  • The Free City should be protected

Public Agenda

The Guild is primarily occupied with magical education and research. They have a heavy hand in the running of Greyhawk's University of Magical Arts, alongside the more insular Circle of Magi. Their members are as likely to be found surrounded by tomes and notes within the Free City Guildhall as they are to backpack in the wilderness, seeking artifacts in ruins or conducting field experiments.

Assets

The guildhall is located in Greyhawk’s Garden Quarter. This building is an architectural wonder and is considered to be of magical design and impregnable. It’s many vaults house numerous tomes, which have been collected and stored here over the last two centuries. Housed here are the magical fortunes of numerous archmagi, including those of the legendary Zagig, or so it is believed.
