The Pit
A hulking and unmistakable structure in the Foreign Quarter , The Pit is the beating heart of gladiatorial combat in Greyhawk. Inside its bloodstained arena, warriors face off against one another—both in lethal and nonlethal duels—or test their mettle against ferocious beasts.
The spectacle draws all walks of life: the wealthy elite, seeking a thrill beyond their comfortable lives; the common rabble, craving brutal entertainment; and those simply hungry for violence and spectacle.
The Pit is owned by Andrade Mirrius, a shadowy figure who rarely makes an appearance—except when blood is guaranteed to flow. He watches from his private box, his cold smile widening only at the sight of a killing blow. The arena’s daily operations, however, are managed by Pietain Morvannis, a harsh but fair overseer who ensures that the establishment runs with ruthless efficiency. Pietain is responsible for hiring and firing staff, procuring monsters, and handling finances, while Andrade occasionally arranges special events of deadly spectacle.
Events at The Pit
The Pit hosts four primary forms of combat, each with its own audience and stakes:
- Nonlethal Gladiatorial Combat – Fighters wield blunted weapons, such as clubs, shields, and nets. These bouts are brutal but not fatal—at least, not intentionally.
- Lethal Gladiatorial Combat – Armed with deadly steel, warriors engage in blood-soaked battles that draw the largest and most frenzied crowds. These are the main event, where fortunes are won and lost on a single stroke of a blade.
- Warrior vs. Monster – Fighters face terrifying creatures such as bugbears, trolls, owlbears, and worse. Since monsters are expensive to replace, management prefers that combatants subdue rather than slay—except in the case of trolls, whose regenerative abilities make them exempt from mercy. The star attraction for the past two years has been Oswald, the arena’s resident manticore. His wings are clipped, his tail spikes removed, yet he still fights with deadly ferocity, cheered on by a rowdy faction from the River Quarter who see him as a champion.
- Unarmed Combat – Wrestlers and pugilists clad in garish, flamboyant costumes engage in dramatic showdowns. These bouts, beloved by the older generation, are often fixed, ensuring the crowd gets an entertaining performance rather than an actual contest.
The Atmosphere of The Pit
The Pit is more than just an arena—it is a chaotic, deafening, and raucous experience. The three-tiered seating and private boxes overflow with spectators from every corner of Greyhawk, their booming shouts and taunts drowning out even the combat itself. Famous cries such as "Killin’s too good for 'im!" and "Come on, you’ve still got one leg left!" echo through the stands, mingling with the screams of the wounded and the ringing clash of steel.
Gambling and the Thieves’ Guild
Betting is a way of life at The Pit, and all wagers are controlled by the Foreign Quarter Thieves' Guild . Their bookmakers line the lower tiers, adjusting odds through a secret sign language, while apprentice thieves scramble through the stands collecting bets. Instead of coin, wagers are exchanged for colored tickets—a safeguard against pickpockets, though it does little to stop outright robbery. While some fights are blatantly rigged, the bookies operate fairly enough, paying out on winning bets without dispute.
The Infamous Meat Pies
No visit to The Pit is complete without encountering the infamous piemen, who hurl steaming meat pies to spectators in exchange for flicked silver coins. These pies, wrapped in greasy brown paper, are mysteries unto themselves—no one knows what kind of meat they contain, and no one dares ask. As with all things in the seedier parts of Greyhawk, let the buyer beware.
