The Grand Theatre & The Playhouse

A monument to art and culture, the Grand Theatre stands proudly in the Garden Quarter, its faded baroque splendor illuminated by flickering lanterns.

The adjoining Playhouse Theatre offers a stage for experimental works and comedic performances, while the Grand Theatre itself is dedicated to classical drama, bardic recitals, and poetry readings.

Performances are held year-round, except for a brief holiday in Goodmonth, and admission prices vary based on prestige. A bardic matinee may cost as little as 5 silver pieces, while a box for six on the final night of a major play can fetch upwards of 30 gold pieces—if one is lucky enough to secure a ticket. Scalpers prey on desperate buyers, often charging double or even quadruple the price, though 25% of these resold tickets are forgeries.

The theatre's mastermind is Kahari Kellainen, a Keolandish half-elf and priest of Lirr, goddess of prose, poetry, and art. As Theatrical Director, Kahari manages schedules, visiting troupes, and all theatrical productions, all while maintaining his sharp wit and undeniable charisma.

Kahari Kellainen – Theatrical Director

  • Height: 5’8” | Weight: 122 lbs. | Age: 92 (appearing around 30 in human terms)
  • Appearance: Lithe and wiry, with fair blond hair and blue-violet eyes
  • Attire: Silk blouson, tight leather britches, always impeccably dressed
  • Personality: Cultured, passionate, and humorous, with an unshakable love for the arts
  • Reputation: Respected by Greyhawk’s elite, known for his keen eye for talent

The Grand Theatre employs a guild of 12 elite performers, including Jarufel Seffairen, a 6th-level half-elven bard and devotee of Olidammara. Behind the scenes, ten skilled stagehands—including halflings and gnomes—work tirelessly, ensuring seamless productions. Among them, a 5th-level gnome illusionist enhances performances with magical effects, weaving illusions that bring the stage to life.

Yet, beneath its refined exterior, the theatre harbors darker secrets. Two of its halfling staff serve as watchers for the Thieves’ Guild , scouting for rich, unsuspecting marks among the nouveau riche. These dexterous rogues (4th-level thieves, 17 Dexterity) may even lighten a few purses as theatergoers depart into the night.
