Temple of Zilchus
At first glance, this squat brownstone pyramid appears almost understated, especially when compared to the grandiose temples and noble mansions of the Upper City. Yet, for those permitted entry, the illusion of modesty vanishes immediately.
The inner sanctum is a bastion of opulence, illuminated by crystal chandeliers, adorned with golden ornaments, and lined with silver statuary and platinum candleholders—a reflection of the wealth and influence that Zilchus, the god of commerce and negotiation, bestows upon his followers.
Though the temple’s congregation is small, its vast wealth betrays its modest numbers. Businessmen, moneychangers, and merchants, who thrive under Zilchus’s watchful gaze, donate lavishly, ensuring the temple’s coffers remain overflowing. Regular services are held on Godsday evenings, but at other times, visitors will find only the clergy and staff overseeing its operations.
A Fortress of Wealth
The temple holds a staggering 100,000 gp in precious metals, with another 50,000 gp in statues and tapestries. However, would-be thieves face impossible odds if they dare attempt a heist.
- The interior is a great square chamber, with a polished marble floor that reflects torchlight like a still pond.
- Four massive stone doors, one on each wall, serve as the only exits. Each requires a combined Strength of 150 to force open.
- Eight black stone columns surround the center of the room, where cushioned benches allow visitors to rest and admire the temple’s immense wealth—on full display.
Defenders of the Vault
The temple is overseen by Revered Speaker Stakaster Villaine, a 10th-level priest, assisted by several acolytes. However, the true guardians of the temple are its eight stone golems, which awaken upon the command of any cleric.
- A spoken command can seal all four doors, preventing any exit. Only Stakaster and his second-in-command can reverse this.
- The vault holds 60,000 gp in coins and 25,000 gp in gemstones—protected by a deadly crushing block trap (4d10 damage).
- At the slightest sign of disturbance, the doors slam shut, the golems activate, and the temple transforms from a house of worship into an unbreachable fortress.
