Moneychangers' Guildhall
This imposing structure serves as the headquarters of one of the city's wealthiest—and most disliked—guilds. The Moneychangers' Guild not only exchanges currency but also lends money, often at rates that stir resentment among borrowers.
Because of their wealth and unpopularity, most guild members conduct their business exclusively within the guildhall, avoiding public dealings in the marketplaces or streets.
Currency Exchange and Fees
The guild offers currency exchange at the following rates:
- 10% fee for most transactions.
- 5% fee for coins from Dyvers and Urnst (as they are commonly accepted in Greyhawk).
- 20-25% fee for unfamiliar or distant currencies.
Security and Vaults
The guild vaults are heavily protected, staffed by:
- Two elite thieves (8th level).
- Four veteran fighters (7th level).
- A formidable mage (9th level).
- Twelve 1st-level guards, stationed throughout the grand lobby during business hours.
At night, six guards and one thief remain on active patrol, ensuring that security is never compromised. Any would-be thief caught here will be dealt with swiftly and mercilessly.
The vaults hold 5d4 × 10,000 gp, split evenly between Greyhawk currency and foreign coinage.
Guild Social Events
The guild maintains a lavish underground ballroom, used for exclusive gatherings and celebrations—events that are as extravagant as they are secretive.
The Union of Moneychangers and Pawnbrokers
The Union of Moneychangers and Pawnbrokers is one of the most influential financial institutions in Greyhawk. Acting as the city’s de facto bankers, they provide loans for trade ventures and issue credit notes to merchants who prefer not to travel with heavy coin chests.
Union members operate throughout the city, though in poorer districts, they function more as pawnbrokers than moneychangers. The union also maintains a strong presence at the Merchants’ and Traders’ Union Guildhall .
Interest Rates & Loan Policies
- Loan interest rates vary based on risk and borrower reputation:
- Merchants' and Traders' Union members: 20%-50%
- Other individuals: Up to 100% or more
- DM’s discretion applies to player character loans—restrictions and high-interest rates should be expected.
- Defaulting on debts is dangerous, as the union has strong ties to powerful factions, including the Thieves’ Guild.
Credit Notes & Currency Exchange
- Union-issued credit notes bear an official seal and are redeemable at 100% of face value within accredited establishments.
- Greyhawk’s moneychangers exchange foreign coin:
- Veluna, Furyondy, and Urnst currency – Accepted at face value (10% exchange fee).
- Distant lands' coinage – Exchange rates heavily favor the union (at least 50% loss in value).
Ties to the Thieves' Guild
Many union members are affiliated with the Thieves’ Guild , acting as fences for stolen goods and ensuring the guild receives its cut from illicit activities. In return, moneychangers and pawnbrokers enjoy protection from criminal enterprises. The union's extensive financial records ensure that everyone gets paid—more or less.
