Mercenaries' Guildhall

This fortified, block-like structure serves as the headquarters of the Free City’s Mercenaries’ Guild, a powerful organization overseeing the hired swords and warriors of Greyhawk.


While not all mercenaries in the city are members, a great many ensure their membership is paid promptly upon arrival—a hefty 10 gp per year, making it one of the more expensive guild fees in the city.

Benefits of Membership

Guild membership grants several key advantages, including:

  • A well-stocked bar offering free drinks to members.
  • Temporary lodging, with bunks in communal sleeping quarters, free for short stays (though mercenaries in town for more than a week are expected to find their own accommodations).
  • Access to employment opportunities, as the guildhall serves as the primary hiring center for those seeking professional warriors.

Mercenaries who betray their employers face permanent expulsion, and most new members must pass a combat trial demonstrating 1st-level fighting skills. This ensures that any hired fighter found here is skilled and reasonably loyal.

Specialists and Guild Discipline

Not all members are pure warriors—mercenaries with specialized skills such as healing, magic, scouting, or animal training may be exempted from the combat trial. These individuals are known as "specialists" and are valued guild members.

Weapons and armor are permitted within the guildhall, but a strict code of discipline forbids any kind of violence, including fisticuffs. Even warriors who once fought against each other on the battlefield must set aside their grudges upon entering. Violators are banished from the guild, and those lacking the discipline to follow the rules tend to avoid the guildhall altogether when tensions run high.
