The Eternal War Military Conflict in Græwal | World Anvil

The Eternal War

"It's madness. No matter how long or hard we fight, the kairanese just keep multiplying. How have we not yet lost?"
"Easy, son. They stop sending troops as soon as they have killed just about every soldier on the field. Then they give us a few decades for reproduction, and the cycle begins anew. It's been like this since the beginning of time, and it will never end"
— A conversation between an aranese fresh face and a veteran
The Eternal War, otherwise known as The First War, is an ongoing war between Aran and Kairan and to this date the only war that has ever existed in Graewal.

Prelude

Before the gods had created Graewal, they lived together in the bottomless space of their universe. All alone in this world, certain groups and dyads soon began to build, and to the dismay of Archideas, some gods even found themselves in intimate relationships. The first of such a couple was between Nifras and Soprimea. The Protogod didn't lose much time expressing his discontent about their relationship, stating that relations between two of his "creations" were incestuous in nature and demanded for them to stop. The pair complied at first, but Nifras soon after decided that his love for Soprimea was stronger than his fear of Archideas and convinced Soprimea to continue their relationship. This enraged Archideas and he threatened to "deliver them back to the space" if they didn't listen to him, but they stood firm. Milusa had noticed their altercation and gathered the other siblings in an effort to support the couple and under the combined pressure of the siblings, Archideas conceided. Aside from a few snarky comments, this seemed to be the end at first.

The First Act of Justice

As soon as the gods settled on their newly created planet and were done with the first stages of populating it, Archideas wasted no time to develop the first weapons and armor. Rumours have it that his soldiers had to sleep in their own armor to keep themselves warm in the cold outside, because their god forgot to invent houses and instead focused on smithing.
Nifras had already forgotten the argument that had ensued thousands of years earlier and thus didn't see the attack coming. A lot of cultures were traveling to the edge of their territory at this point in time to mark the borders and so it wasn't alarming when hundreds of kairanese soldiers appeared on his doorstep.
They attacked in the night, their assault being so coordinated that most aranese barely had any time to wake up. The ones who did wake up immediately regretted it as they witnessed their loved ones being slaughtered without having any means of defending themselves. The world hadn't known violence yet, and so they knew no defense.
Nifras himself wasn't there at the time of the assault, spending time with his lover. Although he did return as soon as he received a telepathic message from someone who survived for long enough to send one, by the time he arrived the attack was already over.
They left around a third of the population alive, with the bodies of the deceased on the grass forming the phrase "The First Act of Justice".

An Eternity of Suffering

As the message implied, the First Act was only the beginning of an eternity of warfare between the two countries. Though Nifras and his siblings were appalled by the actions of Archideas, their pleas for him to stop led to nothing other than more threats from Archideas. Should anyone other than Nifras and Soprimea join this fight, they would regret it.
Up to this point, nobody had ever challenged the might of the Protogod and the others were fearful of his powers. Being the creator of them all, would he have the power to eradicate their existence?
With apologetic countenances, they had to admit defeat. Nobody was ready to go to war with the primordial god, especially since they hadn't researched anything related to military equipment. Soprimea offered to do the research and join him in battle, but Nifras refused, seeking to carry the burden for himself. Instead, she would support him in any other way possible, allowing refugees to migrate to her country and training war medics to aid the soldiers on the battlefield. Considering the immediate proximity of their border, Galus offered refuge in the confines of his country as well.
But considering the vast size difference between Aran and Kairan, it was never enough. The aranese would always be defeated sooner or later and just like the first assault, kairanese soldiers would get the order to stop attacking when there was barely anyone on the aranese side left. A few decades of peace followed, only for the attacks to start again.
Until today, this cycle continues, gnawing at the population of Aran, but for now, there is no end in sight.
