The Last Painting of Vagios
Dioktan artist Mikalo Vagios is often considered the greatest painter of the last century. He moved throughout his life but he eventually retired to Granmont, where the world-weary Vagios lived a private and reclusive rest of his life. The man even went as far as to pay for his room in cash and use a fake name on written records. Despite the hermitage, it is widely believed that he continued painting in these final years of his life. He eventually died in a hospital and the matter was forgotten.
Somewhere exists a painting beautifully depicting Granmont in Vagios' style. If authentic this not only proves that he continued painting, it may be the clue to uncovering the rest of his unseen works.
Alternatively, Tess can take the paintings and sell them but this could cause her to become cursed. It needs to be clear that Vagios' wish is for the collection to remain together, and the only way to ensure that is
Phase 1
The first leg of the quest involves finding the location the painting was made from. This will likely involve a combination of visual comparisons, analysis of perspective, and discussion with locals. Their is an options downtime step where Tess reproduces the painting in a form that can more easily be carried; if done, this gives a +4 item bonus to relevant subsequent checks. Excluding this optional step, successes on 2 downtime activities are needed. The first success localizes the painting to the Promenade neighborhood in Cheminée, the second deduces the exact building.Phase 2
The second phase involves finding the exact room Vagios lived in and getting access. The room has been left untouched for decades with the door plastered over. A perception check to notice the plaster, society to compare with similar floorplans, or diplomacy to ask the neighbhors is required to sniff this out. With the room identified the party needs access. This can be obtained from the Landlord (Diplomacy/Deception) or by breaking in (Thievery). If the Landlord is talked to he'll warn the party that the reason the room was closed was because of unaccountable phenomona, including a general feeling a malaise upon entering. This should tip the party off that they should have a way to harm incorporal undead, and that this will be more of a mini-dungeon than a downtime activity.Phase 3
The final act of this quest is laying Vagios' spirit to rest, or absconding with the trove of paintings. When they enter they feel a chill, and a whisper: "...uuuur... aaiii..." The entrance leads into a studio with finished and unfinished paintings and sculptures. As the party looks around or tries to enter the bedroom, a painting will come alive (Living Oil Graffiti 3) as will a sculpture (Animated Statue 3). As they dispatch these, another whisper: "returrn... sto..." The bedroom contains more unfinished paintings. There is a tipped easil next to the bed, which rest right up against a window. The bed is neatly made. Moaning rings out "Return! Retuuurn!" As the fight progresses, the ghost continues to talk "Stolen from my deathbed!", "Thief of a Coroner!", "Return my stolen painting! Allow me to finish it!". If the party fells the ghost combat ends but the whispers continue "stolen painting, stolen from my deathbed by that thief of a coroner. stolen and unfinished. just missing the final touches. return my stolen painting. return what I must finish. must finish. must." The party can loot the paintings, but they will carry with them the curse of vagios (will save to observe vs fascination) which will limit their value and cause the signature to disappear. If the party returns Vagios' Last Painting the ghost will materialise and moan "My painting! It has returned! After all this time it shall be completed!" and it flies into the canvas. With a glow the damage is undone; the creases uncrease, the wine stains disappear. Even the unfinished details are filled in and the signature "Mikalo Vagios" is scorched into the corner. The landlord will meet the party outside after they're done. He explains that he admired Vagios and considered him a friend. He passed in his bed and the eleemosynar coroner stole the painting depictnig the beacon. Angered that his collection was split this caused the vengeful vagios' spirit to linger. With the spirit laid to rest the landlord will offer to convert the room into a museum dedicated to the artists, with appropriate credit given to Tess.Alternatively, Tess can take the paintings and sell them but this could cause her to become cursed.
