Gothic Age

Scope

The motivation behind building Gothic Age

The old page seems to have been deleted or glitched out of existence, but this world project started as a fanfic and turned into its own thing (as one does).   A bit of classic gothic lit, a bit of haunting ambiance, a lot of remnants of the original fanfic (I'm sure no one will guess ^_^;).   Vampires, zombies, and werewolves, oh my.

Theme

Reader Tone

Despite the gothic literally in the name and throughout (and plenty of dark, both literal and figurative), I personally hate hopeless grimdark. Tragedies happen, as they do, but every night has its dawn.   Not every monster has claws, and not all who have claws are monsters.

Recurring Themes

Besides the layers of All Things Gothic, I hope to weave in some of the themes of social change/disruption that comes hand in hand with the accessibility of new technologies. For this setting, it's things like photography and more manageable printing presses that made information widely (and wildly) more available than in any previous age.    Add a touch of supernatural and a hint of magic, and who knows what could happen?

Focus

Media and Technology

The roots of journalism and mass media distribution, its benefits (and damages), and the way it changes the foundations of how people think. For good, and ill.

Commerce and Trade

Again, with advances in industry come the increased ability to meet demands for goods and services, which drives the need to transport goods and provide services, which in turn leads to more innovation, which drives further demand for implementation, etc.   Then drop a few traditionalist vampires with a hunger for power and dislike for anything that threatens their tightly woven trading networks into the mix.

Classic Gothic Lit

Old fashioned monsters, high society shenannegans, ye olde worker exploitation, and maybe a touch of murder.    Tales as old as time.
