Graveyard of the Ancestral Kings
Greenwyrm Vale, 25th of Sow
General Summary
Having opened one of the tombs of the Ancestral Kings, several specters rose from the tombs. Hado, Marvroth and Terey fled into the next chamber, while Thurstan and Ballamin remained behind hoping to loot the tomb. In the next chamber, a pentagram was carved into the floor and as the three heroes crossed the threshold, a reptilian spectral figure began to materialize.
Suddenly, a force out of nowhere hurled Thurstan back against the wall of the mausoleum. Terey, upon seeing the reptilian creature materializing was put in mind of the legend of the Greenwyrm – the great legendary dragon that Greenwyrm Vale was named after who, upon his death, attempted to gain immortality by dealing with demons and transferred his soul into a demonic body, but was betrayed and sealed away from the outside world. Whether or not the materializing figure was the Greenwyrm Demon Spirit, Terey told everyone to run.
Hado held out his holy symbol as he advanced back into the mausoleum and one of the specters fled. The party engaged the specters in combat. Their job was made more difficult by a poltergeist throwing them around the chamber, but they triumphed over the specters in the end, just as the spirit from the next chamber began to break free of the pentagram keeping it at bay.
Unfortunately, Terey was killed by the poltergeist, who lifted him high to the ceiling before slamming the halfling down into the chamber floor, breaking his neck. Hado retrieved his friend’s corpse, pausing only to take Terey’s cloak – the Cloak of the Raven Queen – for himself. The party fled back into the trapped corridor that had led down to the mausoleum.
In the middle of the corridor, a swinging, scything blade blocked their path. Thurston, Bellamin, and Marvroth attempted to tumble past, but both took deep cuts on their way. Hado tried to throw Terey’s body past the blade, but only succeeded in impaling the corpse on one point of the scythe. Marvroth retrieved the mutilated body and fled, forgetting the pressur pad near the entrance door and leaping over it a fraction late, triggering a poison spray from the ceiling which brought the dragonborn paladin to his knees. Hado, seeing the oncoming demon spirit, tumbled ably past the blade only to land directly on the pressur plate, releasing more poison and dropping both himself, and Marvroth. Bellamin paused only to heal Hado before joining Thurstan in the entrance chamber to the graveyard.
Thurstan called for help from the prince’s guards. and dragged his friends back into the room. Bellamin ran for one of the puzzle gates used to seal the door and spoke the password, shutting the spirit inside the graveyard.
Moments later, Prince Raolin arrived with a detachment of guards and demanded to know what happened. After hearing their tale, the prince rebuked the group, letting them know that their job was to take warning of the invasion to his father in the capital, not to rob the tombs of his ancestors, but he needed the group, particularly Terey and Hado who had witnessed the attack on Vale Tower.
Prince Raolin called a cleric who took Terey’s body to the chapel and attempted to resurrect him. The resurrection called Terey’s departing soul back to his body, nearly killing the cleric in the process, and leaving Terey’s body heavily scarred along with his mind. Terey felt unsafe when not around Hado and began to cling to his friend.
The group were told to rest up. They had lost a precious day and they needed to decide whether to reenter the Graveyard or attempt to run the harbor blockade in one of the Prince’s ships. Deciding that the blockade run was too risky, they agreed to reenter the tombs and face the spirit, so the next morning, the party gathered once more in the entrance chamber.
