The Ruby Arrow

Purpose / Function

The Ruby Arrow serves as both the primary inn and cultural centerpiece of Camor. Originally intended as a waystation for weary travelers, it has since evolved into a culinary landmark. With an ever-expanding and diverse menu, the establishment now attracts food lovers, noble patrons, trade emissaries, wandering bards, and experimental chefs from across the continent. Beyond mere hospitality, the Ruby Arrow has become a symbol of Camor’s identity—a beacon of how culture, commerce, and cuisine intersect.

Management & Staff

The innkeeper, Tyne, is a grizzled dwarf of few words, a former soldier who carries the scars—and the mace—of a hundred battles. He runs the establishment with military precision, ensuring rooms are always prepared, guests are secure, and no drunken brawl ever lasts more than six seconds. Despite his gruff exterior, Tyne is deeply proud of the inn’s legacy and protects its name with fierce loyalty.

The head chef, Gilas, is a dark-skinned halfling with deep-set eyes and a calm, commanding demeanor. He has trained with the Baroness herself as well as a number of culinary legends, Gilas brings a blend of technique, cultural heritage, and daring creativity to every dish. Under his guidance, the kitchen has taken on a near-sacred reputation. Every plate is a canvas, every service a performance.

Architecture

The building itself is solidly built of stone, with heavy carved wooden doors adorned in spiraling culinary motifs—knives, vines, and flames woven in elegant dwarven knotwork. A broad hearth dominates the common room, above which hangs a collection of magical and ceremonial weapons gifted by travelers, former soldiers, and notable patrons. These weapons, carefully enchanted to remain harmless on the wall, stand as a silent testament to the inn’s history and prestige.

The inn side offers a range of simple but well-kept rooms. Beds are built from local timber, padded with wool-stuffed mattresses, and warmed by radiant stones imported from Grangerford. The rooms are modest in size but cozy, always clean, and scented faintly with rosemary and mint.

The restaurant wing, however, is where the heart of the Ruby Arrow truly beats. An open kitchen at the far end allows patrons to observe the cooking process. Hanging baskets of rare herbs from Virifell and spice drawers labeled in multiple languages decorate the shelves. The seating is communal and warm, with long tables and benches, though private alcoves are available for nobility or secretive clients.

History

The Ruby Arrow began as a simple tavern servicing the caravans and supply trains of early Camor. Its transformation began with the arrival of Baroness À La Carte, a wandering and elusive master chef known for reshaping entire communities through food. She trained the staff, established the menu’s structure, and left as mysteriously as she arrived. In her wake, the Ruby Arrow exploded in popularity. Over the next few years, trade routes shifted to pass directly through Camor just for a taste of its offerings.

The inn became a landmark, spurring the town’s growth, and soon drew the attention of prominent figures—alchemists, nobles, retired adventurers, and scholars of cuisine. Food festivals began to center around the inn, drawing travelers from across the region. Even foreign dignitaries began making detours for a meal.

Tourism

The Ruby Arrow has become Camor’s number one tourist destination, and is considered by many to be one of the top culinary spots on the continent. Food critics, nobles, and even adventurers mark the inn as a must-visit location. Bards often perform in the evenings, some even writing songs about the meals themselves.

During food festivals, the Ruby Arrow hosts cooking competitions, chef duels, and experimental tastings. Seats must be reserved months in advance during the peak of these events, and some travelers arrive with handwritten recipes in hopes of earning a place in Gilas’s temporary apprentice program.

The menu rotates seasonally but includes a famous rotating roster of exotic dishes, often enhanced through minor alchemical processes. Everything from phoenix meat to bear flank to rare coastal shrimp finds its way onto the menu, prepared with meticulous care and often paired with specific drinks. Every dish is accompanied by suggestions from Gilas’s drink list, carefully curated to elevate the meal. Patrons often spend more time deliberating over pairings than they do selecting the meal itself.
