Farming
Due to the lack of access to most larger areas of land as with ocean merfolk, these merfolk have decided to try a combination of traditional famring and subterranean water plants and fungi. This has led to the flourishing of rare herbs not often found away from the mountain.Fish farms are not uncommon either. Large net enclosures filled with trout, salmon, and shrimp can be seen hanging near thier owners' homes.
Other Resources
Due to the prevalent access to Tin, Copper, Iron, Zinc, and the occasional smaller deposit of silver Mining and smithing are abundant in the city. Alongside the smithing industry a strong economy of leatherworking and scrimshaw aid the economy of Lake Bierik.Trade
Trade in Lake Bierik is rare. Some things are purchased from wandering merchants and adventurous travellers but the settlement generally keeps out of the way of major trade routes priding itself on self sufficency and secrecy.Infrastructure
The entire settlement seems to sink downwards into the lake. The buildings closest to the surface have pens and shallow flooded sunbathing roofs. As you go deeper you find bioluminescant lamps and magical fires light the depths. Streets are unneccesary but large tunnels with signs guide you through the deeper sections of the city.
History
Originally founded to host a breeding program to domesticate flighted wildlife for military use many centuries ago, history is a bit muddy on the exact age of the settlement as most records from its
founding years are lost. While the original breeding program became largely defunct soon after the founding, the last century has seen it slowly regain some steam along with the growth of the city.
Lake Bierik's population has grown greatly over the last century, prompting Mayor Bergos Patricius to ban further excavation of the mountain to prevent leaks or volcanic vents from opening.
With overpopulation now officially declared, the settlement now searches for more ways to grow.
