Chapter 2: Verse 9: On The Road Again...Again
General Summary
This is a bear...a what?...an owl...a what? Oh and Owlbear.
Shortly after their encounter with the Elk and apparent Elk Blessed by Elk Gods; the party continued east out of the Greenbelt and towards the open lands. Following along the river, they encountered a clearing where the river lessened in width and discovered another Owlbear drinking and fishing from the river with its back turned to the party. This owl bear however was not a mother nor did it look like a normal wild animal as it was covered in scars and scratches from a number of fights its been in and mostly a "bear who has not turned down a fight". The party took a stealthy approach and hoped to sneak by but the smell of the party caused the Owlbear to detect their presence enough to arouse suspicion. Rox tried to cause a distraction in which a dart was thrown into a bush in order to maybe get the owlbear's attention away from the party's movement but their use of the skill didn't outwit the owlbear's natural perception and a battle broke out. The owlbear however was caught off guard enough to where the party couldn't even move into position completely before it was taken down within just a moment of time. The party harvested some ingredients to use for dinner that night and Kellan took a feather to stick in her hair from the fallen Owlbear.
A Camping Story - Part 1
The party set up an early camp for the night and took some time resting. Rox tried to create a dish they heard about called "Shephard's Pie" using ingredients and special ingredients from the Owlbear they fought that day but unfortunately didn't get it quite right, resulting in the loss of 8 ingredients into the failed dish. Ejaya Everwinter set up a watch schedule amongst the group so that they could get a good jump on anything that would try to sneak up to them during their sleep. Klass finished working on a new longsword for Tav that he named Feythorn, which is a +1 Potency Rune Cold Iron sword. Kellan took her best attempt at cooking a regular meal for the group and, while confused as to how the raw ingredients became food, managed to cook some kind of venison stew for the group with some success. The party took a restful sleep that night while taking their turns in the rotation of the watch.
Christmas in The Stolen Lands
During the night, The Spirit of Christmas visited the party to bring upon them an assortment of gifts! Here is what the group got so far:
- Kellan received a tattoo called Bewitching Bloom (Cherry Blossom)
- Tav received a Sapling Shield (Lesser)
- Ejaya received a walking cauldron she named Spoon
- Rox received a Deck of Mischief
- Moth received a Navigator's Star tattoo on his hand
- Klass received a Noisemaker's Snare
- Ejil received a ......
This Sycamore Tree is more of a Sick-Uh-More
The party arrived at the Old Sycamore tree in which they were told that a group of gremlins took a sack of treasure from the Thorn River Bandit camp and brought back to their lair. The party did some quick searching and found that there was a hidden entrance into the root base of the tree and into some underground caverns. The height of the tunnels was roughly 5 feet, making movement and combat a challenge for the party as they began to make their way through the tunnels. Ejil Everwinter , Shia'has and Ximenita Cabótica stayed behind to watch their wagon as the rest of the group descended into the labyrinth.
The party began their delving into the lair and found that besides the entrance, it was complete darkness as the Mitflits didn't need light to see, nor did the pets they kept. Kellan used her magic to cast Invisibility on Ejaya who scouted out ahead to see what the caverns kept before the group could get there since sight was an issue except for her and Tav. Ejaya being invisible, would go far enough to see what was happening but not so far to where the Message spell that Kellan was using would be out of range. Using this tactic, the two of them were able to establish a good scouting routine for the next few caverns.
Searching down the path, the party discovered a hatchery for the Giant Centipede pets that the Mitflits liked to breed and raise. This hatchery was quickly dispatched by Moth and Klass with some backup support from the rest of the group. It should be mentioned that at this time, Klass revealed Monocle Klass to Moth who was extremely surprised by this reveal and wondered where the hell this version of Klass was kept and not being fronted the whole time as they been going into these dangerous situations, but more on that after the Lair was eradicated.
The party took over one more cavern room that seemed to be a war room or council chamber of sorts where the Mitflit leader, Grabbles and his pet giant tick Tickleback, were conferring the plan with other mitflits in the room. The talk of the war between the Mitflits and the Sootscale Kobolds was a hot topic as the mitflit gang discussed how they were going to launch a new assault on the Sootscales after learning all they could about their encampment and strategy from the ones they held prisoner and were torturing in a different chamber. Ejaya attempted her way through the Mitflits to the other side to where she could act as a barrier between the exit and the mitflits if they tried to escape. However, even while being dirty herself, her smell was too different from the rest of the cavern lair and the mitflits picked up her scent.
Klass immediately sprung into action, still wearing his monocle, and used a new invention of his called a Flamethrower, and unleashed a spray of fire over an entire side of the table and direct hitting the leader. The two mitflits engulfed in flame died in less than a second from the sheer power of the fire while the third degree burns and persistent burning on the body of the leader, Grabbles, horrifically hurt him but didn't kill him outright. The battle continued with blows being given to all the mitflits, but not much was done to the party in terms of retaliation as the Mitflits stood no chance against their hot and heavy tactics against them.
The war room was taken out in a single moment and the party took to looking around them room before they continued forward.
