The Role of the Sun and the Moon

Sun as Life's Source:

The Sun in Alathor is much more than a celestial body. It acts as a direct portal to the Giver from which the Life Force is able to pour forth from, with Alathor acting as a conduit that is able to draw the life force into it. This metaphysical energy flows continuously, animating all life on Alathor. Without this constant influx of Life Force, the world would wither. But the capacity of Alathor is also based on the amount of life on it that is able to further absorb energy - if too much of the life force flows into the planet and if there is not enough life to contain it, it risks becoming overcharged, overheated, and bursting.

Moon Gate as the Passage to Death:

The Moon Gate is both a metaphysical and spiritual gateway through which Life Force exits Alathor when a creature dies. This exit is essential to maintain balance, ensuring that the planet does not become overwhelmed with energy. Though not intentionally part of its design, Moon also has come to serve as a passage for Soulforce, now purified of the corruption of The Harbingers, to either transition peacefully into a higher realm or become a star.

Unfinished Souls:

The stars in the night sky are not just distant suns, but lost souls—beings whose Soulforce remains tied to unfinished tasks or unresolved emotional states. Because the Tinkerer had not anticipated or expected for the Moon to draw anything other than life force, though, it is possible for aspects of a person's soul to either wander off and become lost or simply refuse to move on, if there is something it feels is unresolved and holds it back. These aspects are the stars that fill the heavens. Before Bulan's arrival, it was common for souls to get lost - Bulan's abilities allow her to guide souls to and through the Moon Gate, and so it is much less common, and why she has become known as the goddess of death, guidance, transition, and the guardian of the moon gate. This metaphysical principle reveals the fluid boundary between life and death, where a soul may linger in the metaphysical space instead of completing its journey.
