Crane Imperial Navy

Sructure and Ranks

The modern Imperial Navy is ran by the Sea Marshal, who is usually a member of the Highborn, but not always, but as a position of power and responbility it tends to fall to members of the Imperial Court, at present the Sea Marshal is Kitani Michiru, the Michiru is an old imperial court family who have often held many positions of power within the Imperium, from Marshals to Advisors to the Imperial Family. Kitani is a career naval officer, she worked her way up the ranks like all, and didn't expect her family name to give her any legs up.   Below the Sea Marshal are the Captains and Commanders of the fleet, those men and women that command the ships of the navy, below them are the Lieutenant Commanders, Lieutenants, Sub-Lieutenants who run the watchs, specialist crews and other organised groups onboard each ship. And below them are the newest members of the leadership of the ships the Ensigns, those boys and girls sent to learn to be officers of the navy by their families. To become an Ensign every single applicated as to past both a face to face interview with a board of experience officers and a written exam.   Below the officer corp, there are many enlisted men and women onboard all the ships, some have specialist skills like carpentary, surgeons and cooks, while others are just regular members who happened to be good at the work they do.

Ships of the Imperial Navy

The ships of the Navy are split into groups based on size and armaments, the largest of them are limited in number due to cost of building and keeping them afloat, when relately of it is the most likely war for the Imperium is with their northern cousins on Mikazu of the Urugoth Expanse who have little to no offical navy, and live a nomadic livestyle across the plains, so its impossible to blockage their ports as their have none, Traders from other lands just find a nice beach to land on and head inland to find the nearest clan or family of the Expanse.   So the navy mostly is used to deal with Pirates, Privateers and the dregs of society from other kingdoms looking to make a living on pillaging traders between the Imperium and other areas of Godai. Which shows in the numbers and size of the ships.   They only have 2 of the largest classification of Ships afloat at the present time that number as swung as high as 10 and as a low as 0 over the last 150 years, but right now they just have 2 afloat, and they are used mainly for long distance patrols around the The Great Oceans and the seaways between Mikazu and Goshin to the east as some of the most profitable trade routes are in that direction. As well as the 2 floating top rates, there is 1 airship that also falls within that caterogy, the airships are experimental and only in the last 10 years have anything other than models and test builds, have appeared. These flying ships look and handle very similar to an ocean going vessel other than than they have an 3rd direction they can move. Obviously as more of these are built, the other nationals may start being concern over the serious advantage they will give to the Imperium in any war. But right now they in such small numbers everyone is unconcerned.   The medium rate of ships, the larger 3 deck ships (maindeck and 2 built into the ship inself) are used to guard and watch key points along sea routes mostly along the islands on the northern end of the continent. There are 8 of these at the present time, again not a huge number but outside a time of war, the Imperium likes to keep costs down, there are maybe two dozen that are mothballed in the naval docks in the port towns and cities of the imperium, which could be brought back into service with different levels of work some could be up and running in weeks, others may take a year or more to refurb. Along with the standard floating mid rate ships there is one flying variant which is used by Kitani as her personal transport between the different ports of the empire.   Below these top level ships are the lower rating and unrated sloops, brigs and corvettes, those ships limited to short and coastal routes, they mostly used to guard and transports officals around the coasts of the Crane Imperium or to help transport critical supplies to were there needed. There around 20 of the lower rated ships and maybe 50 unrated total offically within the Crane Navy, but exact numbers are hard to come by as often these ships are in dry dock or away on some important secret mission actual avaiable numbers vary from year to year.   The standard armaments on board a naval ship tends to be ballista's and catapults on the main deck, as well as rams built to the prow of the ships. But if fighting happens at sea, its usually heavily involving boarding actions, with the ballista and catapults used to slow down the target ship via damaging sails and such like.
