Immortal Kings

Volga has returned to Hyrule with orders to search for the Forge of Tears. He starts by attempting to get some strength back by eating Subrosians and Gorons, but centuries of not eating has made it nearly impossible for his stomach to accept anything. He then attacks Zora's Domain with the Yiga, and takes it over. The Zora are his hostages, and so is Hyrule's water supply. He is demanding Hyrule surrender to him, but they are refusing him.

Themes

Who can you trust? Who is forgivable, and who is not? Is death acceptable for those who long to die?

Structure

Exposition

  • Rotana has headed straight for the Subrosians with instructions from Shinzo. She may have been spotted as a strange human figure appearing near the crater. She will head to the mirror, and activate it, making Death Mountain unstable. She will go straight to Volga, and tell him of Shinzo’s return, the orders to draw Hyrule's people away from the castle, and the reactivation of the mirror. (She will not establish a connection between the two, as that would disrupt Volga's Seal)
  • Volga will take this news and immediately begin preparing for war against Hyrule. He will command the subrosians to prepare as well, but realizing that they are worthless in a fight, he decides to demand sacrifices instead, taking on his dragon form for the first time in centuries. None of the subrosians knew he was a dragon.
  • Terrified and outraged, some of the Subrosians will flee to Hyrule. They think that Volga has gone insane or been possessed. They will beg for help in Goron City to free their great immortal king. However, this will cause the Gorons problems, as they are now overrun with Subrosians who can't seem to stomach the lava of death mountain.
  • Without any Subrosians to eat and gain power, Volga will go to Hyrule. He will take several Gorons and eat a few Subrosians before going back to his palace.
  • The Scarlet Stops were on their way up Death Mountain when they witnessed Volga attack. The lead singer tried to stop Volga, but was injured instead. They decided to head back down to Zora’s Domain instead of continuing the ascent, (Escalation 1) but Zora's Domain is captured, so they will remain in the hots springs between Death Mountain and Zora's Domain.
  • Rotana and Volga conspires to take over Zora's Domain. The Yiga will assassinate King Sidon and infiltrate the people of the zora. Then, when Volga and the infiltrated Yiga cause a distraction in the domain, they will successfully sneak bombs and set them on the dam by using mind controlled zora. Volga will demand surrender from both the Zora and Hyrule.

Conflict

  1. Subrosians are rushing out to the surface
  2. Volga is back and eating Subrosians and Gorons
  3. Death mountain is erupting due to the power of the mirror being activated
  4. Goron's can't go into their deep mines as the earthquakes are making collapses likely
  5. Monsters swarm mines Gorons could go to... and they seem strangely intelligent.
  6. Dinraal is nowhere to be seen
  7. Increased Yiga Activity

Rising Action

Zora's Domain - Night   Volga in his human form, cloaked, will be at the Inn. He will be driving the waitress at the bottom of the Inn quite mad. He will be forcing her to listen to him talk, complaining about how He's a king and how no one has any respect for him. He will be acting quite drunk, but his stomach is just upset. He will request the party get a healer for him.(Volga can be at other locations too, depending on where the party is)   If volga is helped, the party will be warned to leave the Domain right then and Volga will view them as friends. If not, the party will be seen as obnoxious, good for nothing rats, and he doesn't understand what Shinzo wants of them.   Zora on the roofs of the buildings will turn into Yiga after a red flare goes off in the palace. Volga will take power, and will be seen flying away as an emaciated dragon. He will proclaim, "This Domain belongs to me, Volga the Immortal Dragon King, and Vile, the god of Warmth. I declare war on Hyrule! Send word of your surrender, Hyrule! Your water and allies are mine to command!"   Interlude - The party can either try to get deeper into The Domain to try to stop what is happening, or they can retreat. Going deeper, they will discover Vile. They will have to fight her for the Domain. However, if they don't first remove the bombs from the dam, the dam will be damaged after her defeat, flooding much of downstream, and sweeping them away from The Domain. Rivan is sneaking around, trying to escape. He may request the party to take him to Hyrule.   Eldin Hotspring - Unknown Time Scarlet Stops are here, and so is Rivan if the party did not encounter him while in The Domain. They will warn them of the dragon on Death Mountain and the attacks they escaped from.   Goron City - Dawn? On the way to Goron City, there are many Subrosians, and multiple earthquakes/eruptions. The Subrosians may frequently stop the party to ask them to help their immortal king, or to ask for food, which they will promptly refuse as they are only interested in their Subrosian Lava Soup.   The Goron Chieftain will lament the inability to go into their deep mines, and the general lack of food because of it. He will remark how they are only managing by accessing an area with a Hinox by putting it to sleep. He'll mention how he's tried to strike down the dragon with cannons, but the monster is too fast to hit. He'll also discuss Dinraal's disappearance (If escalation 1), and will question if the gods are angry with the Gorons for some reason, mentioning the spring of spirits north of Death Mountain. He will mention any other things relevant to escalation if it has gotten to that point.   Advisor, a Subrosian Advisor to Volga, will ask the party again if they would help them save their king. She will mention how she got to Hyrule and the cursed mirror.   Interlude - The party can take several actions here. They can choose to go to the spring, find the mirror, retake The Domain, defend Akkala Citadel, etc. This is the power module, so don't be afraid to put them in multiple fights.   Goron Mines - Unknown Time   The mines will need to be navigated, and are full of monsters. The party will go to the mirror, which will be active. Here, they will encounter Volga, who has captured Advisor. As Volga goes through the mirror, he will send his "guard dog", an Aquamentus to slow down the party.

Climax

Subrosia/Volga's Castle - Unknown Time   Volga's Castle sits in the middle of lava. It is reached by a metal boat.   The place is in sweltering heat (R5).   There are some silly murals depicting "laws" that Volga has passed.   Hero's Route:   Volga will intercept them part way through the dungeon and fight them in human form. Upon losing, he will retreat, claiming he underestimated the party. As the boss, Volga will have Rotana release his seal, corrupting Dana and unleashing his Draconic Magic.   Volga might be killed by the party or by Rotana. However, careful words and an attempt to defend him could leave him alive, but suffering.   Shinzo's Route:   Volga will intercept the party part way through the dungeon. There is opportunity here to just talk with Volga. The party will need to A) agree that they are working with Shinzo and B) agree to find the mirror and convince Hyrule to forbid anyone go near it, regardless of where that location may be. Should the party be convinced to work with Volga and Magnus, Volga will simply go to his throne room to sulk. Rotana, though, will go shatter the mirror before the party can leave. This will prompt the party to more or less finish the dungeon as they will need to get to Volga, who has locked himself in his throne room. They will need Dana's Pearl to repair the mirror. She will agree to allow the party to borrow it if they fight her, regardless of the outcome.   After the fight, they will restore the mirror and return to Hyrule. Death Mountain will continue to be in an unstable state if the party forgets to deactivate the mirror.   If on this route, Volga may need to be fought at a later date.

Falling Action

Advisor will give rewards while they are still in Subrosia.   The party will leave Subrosia. The Subrosians will return to Subrosia. If the king was killed, they will return in sadness, but will still be gracious.

Resolution

Advisor will sing song of subrosia to the party as they leave, not knowing that it is a magical song. She will give the party Hero Tokens if Volga is alive and chests if he is not.   The Goron Chief will give whatever reward Advisor did not give. He will remark how odd it is that Dinraal still hasn't returned (If escalation 1). He may also remark how he was looking down at The Great Forest from the western ridge of Death Mountain, and how through his telescope, he saw some Yiga running into the forest.   He may also tell the party that while the Goron's were neglecting some of their mines, a Hinox moved in. If they want to defeat the beast, He'll give them a nice reward, the song they've been using to keep it from rampaging, Goron's Lullaby.     The Yiga will leave Zora's Domain in a rush if Volga is dead.

Components

Goals

Stop Volga   Save the Subrosians and Gorons   Free the Zora   Restore the supply chain to Hyrule

Hooks

The party will witness Volga take over Zora's Domain, and/or hear that it was claimed in Magnus's name.   Rivan will request the party's services to get him to safety.   The Scarlet Stops will tell of a dragon eating Gorons and Subrosians.   Akkala, at escalation 2, will be bombarded, and the great deku tree burned down.   Water supply and Zoras held hostage, Sidon killed.   Death Mountain threatening to erupt.

Stakes

Volga will continue to harass Hyrule   The water supply can, at any moment, be poisoned, cut off, or flooded.   The Zora are held hostage   Akkala citadel is losing soldiers daily   Hyrule has no supply of stone and ore   Gorons are being eaten   Subrosians are starving   The mountain could erupt

Moral Quandaries

Should you kill someone who doesn't want to fight you? Can you be friends with someone who does terrible things?   Is it alright to commit any act in the name of war? of love?   Will revenge satisfy you?

Cruel Tricks

Shinzo/Magnus is working with Volga, but also with the party. Volga is aware Magnus does not want the party to know this, but he is also aware that the party is important to Magnus's plans. Magnus has told Volga to:
  1. Not mention the name "Shinzo" to anyone, as it is likely forgotten by the world anyway, with the exception of the spirits that the party is collecting.
  2. Try to not fight the party, but if they insist, defend yourself. If you absolutely must, kill some of the party, but not the masked Twili.
Feciel/Vile will be fighting the party, and they won't know that it is Feciel.

Red Herrings

Dealing with Volga will not help Magnus, nor will it bring the party closer to stopping him.
