Personal history

Fen was the earth spirit of Faron, dedicated to protecting Hyrule's forest. She was approached by Shinzo/Magnus one day. He had a piece of the Deku Tree's bark. He wanted her to be bound to the shield to protect Asteria when The Demon King came again. Fen refused, but Shinzo forced her to be bound.   Shinzo gave Fen to Asteria immediately, and from then on did not interact much with Asteria. As such, Fen almost never interacted with him. She did, after seeing how Asteria cared for the princess of prophecy, let go of any hard feelings toward Asteria. They became good friends.   When the princess of prophecy prophesied that Asteria and her family would be banished, Asteria made moves to save her newborn child. This lead to Asteria and Fen leaving for Termina.   Fen and Asteria had many adventures in Termina. Once Asteria passed, Fen helped Asteria make magical puppets so that Asteria could continue to guard and protect the Canyon. After some time, though, Asteria began to go insane, attacking anyone who got close to the mirror or who wandered into Ikana Canyon so that she could interrogate them about her son. Fen and The Great Fairy of Kindness worked together to seal Asteria's spirit away, hoping to stop her rampage. However, even sealed away, Asteria still had some control over the puppets.   Now, Sumrak's Shadow has come to Termina. He's corrupted Fen who was powering the seal on Asteria. He was almost caught by the Great Fairy of Kindness, so he shattered her. He took Fen's pearl.

Employment

Farore appointed Fen to watch over Hyrule's forests, specifically, to protect the earth and its fertility. She protects the trees not for the tree itself, but for the roots that hold the soil. She isn't there to protect life, but rather to ensure that decay produces the cycle of growth and death--maintaining soil fertility.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Fen accomplished much with Asteria in Termina, including making magical masks that would later be used by the Hero.

Failures & Embarrassments

Fen sealed Asteria away, only serving to make her angrier and more insane.

Mental Trauma

Fen was forced to be bound to the shield. She was beaten into submission, and now she longs for freedom.

Morality & Philosophy

Fen is a follower of Farore above all else. She was friends with the Great Deku Tree, the spirit of the Forest.   Fen believes Shinzo is a horrible human and maybe even demon.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Fen wants to be free to protect the forests again. However, she cannot do so as long as she is bound to the shield. She would never admit it, but she is secretly very grateful to Asteria for at least taking her on adventures.   Ultimately, though, protecting the forests is what matters to her most. If helping Shinzo meant that the forests and land were kept from evil magic and the like, she would join him. After all, the things that damaged the earth the most was magic twisted and corrupted into volatile poisons, like malice.

Likes & Dislikes

Fen enjoys adventure, loves freedom, and values innocence

Virtues & Personality perks

Fen is very protective of the innocent, but she embodies the concept of tough love

Vices & Personality flaws

Fen is stubborn and harsh

Social

Religious Views

Farore is her commander of sorts, but she acknowledges the other goddesses as well.

Mannerisms

Fen is very straightforward. She will say exactly what she's thinking and have no remorse about it.

Speech

  1. I was approached by the King of Hyrule. He was holding a piece of the Great Deku Tree’s bark, and he asked me if I would inhabit a shield to protect his wife, Asteria, who was with child. I refused. However, he was much more powerful than I. He bound me to the bark regardless. He then carved the bark into the shield you now hold, and embedded a pearl to retain any excess magic of my own. That pearl seems to be gone now, though. He also told me to remember a phrase, but I can only recall one part: The goddess of time will guide.
  2. I was then given to Asteria, who was previously a Hylian Knight, but when I met her, she was queen of Hyrule. I was surprised to find that, in addition to raising her first born and preparing for her second child, she was also raising princess Zelda, the daughter of the previous king and queen of Hyrule. When I saw the princess, I changed my mind about the whole thing and decided to protect Asteria and the princess. The last thing I remember is Asteria having her second son.
  3. Princess Zelda had a premonition that the demon king, being fueled by the blood and hatred of the civil war, was going to come back soon in the form of a terrible calamity. Asteria explained that was why the king was so desperate to protect his wife and newborn. One day, though, Zelda had a different premonition: she saw the king and all his family and followers being banished by the gods. Zelda told Asteria what would happen to her and her family. However, Asteria begged the goddess of time to spare her newborn from exile. The goddess took pity on Asteria. As a reward for caring for Zelda, the goddess promised Asteria her child’s safety and even promised that she would one day see her descendant. At the goddess’s guidance, Asteria promptly left for Termina, and we never saw Hyrule again.
  4. Asteria spent the remaining days of her life in Termina. She wandered the land making magical masks, which was something Shinzo taught her. Another thing Shinzo taught her was some sort of song that she constantly sang, but I'm no good with music. I couldn't recite it to you. He called it a song of healing.
  5. Aside from making masks, Asteria also participated in some of the conflicts of Termina. Sick of war, Asteria tried to quell a war between the kingdom of Ikana and a neighboring kingdom of ninjas, The Garo. She gave Ikana’s people a mask made of the heart of a monster that devoured the desires of all who approached it. In exchange for the mask, they were to end their war. The mask was named Majora, and unfortunately the mask grew in such power that the people of Ikana became possessed by its evil. She had no choice but to ask the Garo to take the mask from them. What resulted was absolute annihilation. Both factions perished in battle, and Ikana became a wasteland where the dead never rest—their bloodlust driving them in an eternal war. She also made a mask filled with the power of memories, which was meant to honor her husband who was comparable in power... among many other lesser masks, that is. *I wonder if any of her original masks remain in Termina? Or maybe they made their way to Hyrule? (Mask of Truth)*(Alt. I'm willing to bet the Mask of Truth is one of her masks)
  6. The promise that the goddesses gave Asteria was a cruel one. She never did see her direct child during her lifetime. The lingering hope of seeing her child once more, though, prevented her spirit from resting, and she haunted Ikana Canyon for centuries. She lost her mind in the maddening wastes.
  7. But as fate would have it, Asteria’s second child was the incarnation of the Hero of Hyrule. So, what came wandering through Ikana Canyon years later was some distant reincarnation of her son. Although I was able to tell immediately, Asteria’s mind was long faded, and she refused to acknowledge him as her child. He was, afterall, only her child in spirit, not in flesh and blood.
  8. While the hero was in Termina, he quelled the spirits in Ikana and ended their ceaseless war. However, Asteria’s spirit still lingered. She dedicated herself to protecting Ikana Canyon, her grave, and the mirror that bridges Hyrule and Termina. Together with my power, we created puppets that could act as an extension of her spirit. But her mind kept fading further and further until she was consumed by her longing for her family. She started attacking and kidnapping people to interrogate, to ask where her son was. I forced her to rest at that point. With the help of the GFoK, I used myself as a source of power for a magic seal to send her away. All that remained of her was her mindless puppets, who, without a master, aimlessly wandered through Ikana Canyon.
  9. In short, I did what I could to seal her away and, in a sense, forced her to sleep. But then… a servant of Shinzo broke Asteria's seal, and despite her desperate cries to speak with him, see him, or know where he was, the servant would not respond. She became so angry... and that's when the puppets started to capture people to send into Hyrule. I can't say I'm glad to have remembered this memory. Not only was this perhaps my biggest mistake, sealing Asteria away, but also when I became corrupted from the seal breaking... it was like I was being choked by fear. It was very unpleasant.
