Jade-Tailed Oncilla Species in Glenerene | World Anvil

Jade-Tailed Oncilla

The Jade-Tailed Oncilla is one of the smallest wild cats in Glenerene. They are also highly sought after in the black market animal trade as pets for the richer and more notable populous of the world, though they are also sought after in the underworld fur trade.   They are considered particularly impressive creatures for their hunting prowess despite their hunting ability. They are also interestingly, one of the few wild cats that are able to purr, which just makes them more interesting and desirable as pets.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are small cats growing to have a head-and-body length of 15 to 23 inches with a tail that is on average 7.9 to 16.5 inches, standing at about a foot tall. Their fur is thick, sleek, and water resistant. Their eyes are larger than most of their other feline counterparts. They are built for speed and agility.

Genetics and Reproduction

The breeding period takes place in early spring and the gestation period lasts roughly 75 days. They typically only have one cub at a time though they can have up to three and those cubs will stay with it's mother for 4 months.

Growth Rate & Stages

As a kitten they begin to develop teeth at 21 days and eating solid food at 5 to 7 weeks old. They are usually fully weened by 12 weeks and become fully independent in 4 months. By the end of their first year they are typically fully grown and mature.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Their diet consists of birds, small to medium rodents, and reptiles. They are capable of hunting things up to twice their size and do so rather often, especially when they have cubs to feed.

Behaviour

They are very interesting cats in captivity in that despite their wild nature there are surprisingly few reports of them hurting or turning on their owners despite the ability to do so. In fact they are reported to be surprisingly cuddly pets and to purr often and loudly when shown attention. In the wild, and in captivity, the jade-tailed oncilla tend to mate for life and form hunting pairs with that mate. As such they are considered social creatures and can not be owned without a partner, no more than two is recommended however as that seems to cause issues.
