The Return: Session #8
General Summary
Having survived the encounter with the crocodiles, the heroes rested and healed before taking on their next task. Burtak had trouble waking and felt rather tired.
They entered the room of the Hare, and they found themselves separated from the mask by a looming chasm and some floating rocks. Tiny Tim sent his familiar hawk, Felicia, to scout out the far side… some shadowy figure lurched out at the bird. Going back for a second look had Felicia devoured by a floating hyena creature.
The hyena attacked the heroes on the narrow cliff—drifting through the rocky walls and away from their reach. Burtak used his divine magic to create a floating drumstick as a weapon while Kurdan’s raged summoned a powerful axe.
After defeating the primal spirit, Bartuk attempted to jump on a floating rock… but fell to the cavern below. Taking the safer route, Kurdan and Burtak scaled the pits walls to retrieve the mask of the Hare.
Returning to the lobby, they visited the primal spirit of the bat. Inside they found hundreds of bats sleeping above them and giant steps across the large room. Bartuk used his magical silence to help them cross the room without waking the potentially deadly bats.
They found a giant bat waiting for them. Ready to ambush the spirit, they dropped the silence spell and unleashed their attacks… at the same moment realizing that the spirit had been trying to talk to them. As the bats began to swarm around them, the heroes dropped their weapons and apologized. The bat spirit forgave their trespass, and it gave them the mask without conflict. They spoke for a bit and learned that primal spirits were indeed all stuck here, but the Cheetah spirit had escaped some time ago. Wanting to help the bat primal spirit escape, Grubbyfugs offered to act as a vessel similar to Bartuk inadvertently did for the crocodile.
Bartuk continued to show signs of his hosting--- his skin turned greyish and began to show thick bumps growing everywhere. The room of the cheetah opened with a long trapped hallway that required speed to race down to avoid spikes. Kurdan carried Tiny Tim down the hall.
It opened into a room filled with hostile corrupted roots of the tree above. The room also had a put in the floor with a matching hole in the ceiling. They were magically connected as things falling into the pit would then appear falling from the ceiling.
During the fight, Kurdan spotted the cheetah mask and did not hesitate to jump after it. As he picked up the mask and speed, the other heroes fought the growing roots and tried to forge a plan to rescue Kurdan. Casting feather fall and throwing him a rope while the rangers held off the roots proved enough, and they ran back down the hall to escape back into safety.
The hyena room was, of course, empty--- and the heroes easily found that mask.
The final room of the elephant was a large cavern held up by columns. They didn’t have much time to look around as the zombie-like physical form of the primal spirit attacked the party in a rage. It gored Bartuk and then stomped on him as it smashed through a column… threatening to cave in the chamber. Tiny Tim turned Bartuk invisible so he would have a moment to heal himself while Kurdan charged the elephant.
In an incredible feat of strength, Kurdan was gored by one of the elephant’s broken antlers… but outmuscled the elephant and pushed it back. Bartuk ended the battle by using his divine might to subdue the undead creature, allowing the rest of the heroes to destroy its rotten body.
With all the masks in hand, the heroes returned to the lobby and awaited the final “test”.
