Radiation Sickness

Radiation Sickness is a collection of health effects that are caused by being exposed to high amounts of ionizing radiation. It affects all biological creatures and can result in death if untreated.   Due to the uniqe effects of ionizing radiation, it is not considered a poison and thus an immunity to poison does not mean an immunity to radiation. The only way a creature may be immune to radiation exposure is if they have specifficly evolved immunity through genetic mutations, or if the being is non organic.

Causes

As a creature is exposed to ionizing radiation, the electrons in it's cells move haphazardly, resulting in damage to the various molecules forming the cell. Chromosomal DNA inside the cell nucleus can also be damaged. Electrons can be ripped from cells entirely during this process.   Because of damage to DNA and resulting cell death, numerous negative health effects will inevitalby follow.   If in an area of high radiation contamination such as the Whitesburg Exclusion Zone it is reccomended that protective gear is worn and iodine pills are taken to prevent or reduce exposure or it's effects.

Symptoms

Symptoms of radiation sickness vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are vomiting, Diarrhea, intense headaches, blisters and dizziness.

Roll a d10 to assign symptoms to a player who has radiation sickness. 1 seizure 2 headache 3 dizziness 4 a painful burn appears 5 fully body itch 6 slurred speach 7 vomiting 8 nausea 9 tremors 10 temporary blindness
Should no precautions be taken, after 10 hours of unprotected exposure symptoms will begin to show, for evrey 24 hours the creature remains in a contaminated zone, more symptoms will occur. After 12 hours of unprotected exposure the creature will take 1d12 radiation damage. This damage cannot be healed unless magic is used or an overnight hospital stay occours. Take 1d12 radiation damage evrey 12 hours you are exposed.   after 30 hours of unprotected exposure, the creature must make a DC 18 con save. Upon a failure, an ability score will be permenantly reduced by 1. The DM will roll a d6 to decide which score is affected

Prevention

Lead or tungsten lined clothing can prevent radiation exposure, as radiation does not penetrate the surface of those materials. Concrete may also be used, though it is impractical to use in many cases. A hazmat suit will also block the effects of radiation.   Taking Iodine pills will prevent the spread of radiation if exposed, or be used as an additional layer of protection.
